365 - Living & Traveling in the time of Covid-19 (1/2)

My very first real awareness of the Covid-19 virus began on Sunday

March 15m 2020 when I walked up to the local village Church, (St. James) in Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry in Ireland. I was in Glenbeigh for reasons that will

be explained a littler later in my writings and I was heading to 12 Noon

Mass - an important and popular event in this very typical small Irish

Village. I was suddenly stopped in my tracks when I stood and saw the

Church doors were closed. I then looked across to the Pub 6 feet away -

The Towers - those doors were closed also. I could hardly believe my

eyes so just to be sure my eyes and imagination were not playing tricks on me I looked a further10 feet away to the “other” Glenbeigh Pub - Peaders -

No! Those doors were closed too. I know there had been a slight buzz

within conversations about “a virus” over the past few days but that was

all. It was at that moment I accepted life in Glenbeigh had changed. By

the end of that fateful Sunday I became fully aware that life was changing,

not just for Glenbeigh but for Ireland and perhaps the rest of the world.

Life & Living with the Covid-19 virus had begun. This composition outlines

how I personally coped and managed through this past year, March

15,2020 - March 15, 2021.

I am humbled and delighted to participate with other writers in this

ambitious writing project. I love to write. I am not a very good writer

however I just like to write. Honestly, I prefer to take “pen to paper” (P2P)

however, however, I know that typing on an iPad/Computer lends more

legibility for readers. I do continue P2P and keep an old fashioned type of

diary for spontaneous and occasionally entries. Please consider my efforts

here as a compilation of daily thoughts/activities/coping mechanisms I

undertook during the last 12 months while living in the “Time of Covid-19.

As written in my opening paragraph, the first of day of “Living & Traveling

with Covid-19” began for me on March 15, 2020. My number of Covid

days counted may be less, day by day than the count of others I know

who have been keeping track of the Virus. The reason for any slight

difference in day count is that Covid-19 began for me in Ireland. I had

flown to Ireland on March 5 and there was no real “announcement” in the

US of Covid when I left - I recall multiple opinions on the virus. As best as I can remember the “official” Day #1 of Covid in Ireland was announced on

March 15. Due to my personal situation during March 5 and March 12 I

did not keep MUCH interest in what was going on in the USA. As you

read forward it will be clear that my mind & heart were otherwise busy. I’d

also like to explain at least on missing entry “gaps” on my document

before mid May. I was made aware of the Women Writing History (WWH)

project on May 15. I was thrilled to hear of this opportunity an jumped at

the chance to participate. So I began my participation by including my

earlier personal log of my “Travel in the Time of Covid”. Thus this time will

help provide some understanding of limited daily entries prior to May 15,

2020. And so I will begin:

Life can be full of surprises -good and not so good. I had plans for some

time to join my friends Susan & Dennis Delahunty (they now live in N.

Carolina) in Ireland for a bit of a reunion in Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry, Ireland.(I

met Susan and Dennis in 2015 at Mass in the village Church Glenbeigh. I

built a cottage in Glenbeigh in 2006 and had retired to Glenbeigh in 2010.

I was splitting my time between Ireland and California, USA. Susan and

Dennis were on an Irish Adventure for a year. We became firm friends

while we were all living in Glenbeigh. Susan & Dennis had arrived March

1, and I was due to arrive in Glenbeigh on March 26. Sadly my sister

Carol became ill in Cork and I travelled to Ireland on March 5 - 2 weeks

earlier than planned. My sister died a few days after my arrival - early on

the morning of March 9th. Her funeral was held on March 11th. After the

sad and emotional sadness of Carols funeral I went to Glenbeigh on

March 13th. Covid-19 was just beginning to raise its mighty head. I was

concerned but figured I’d be safe enough in peaceful Glenbeigh and could

take time to heal my heart. S&D graciously welcomed me ahead of

schedule.

Travel in the Time of Covid

Day #1 - March 15, 2020

And so it begins .

No Sunday Mass in Glenbeigh today! Unbelievable !Wow! What a

surprise! Within 24 hours of arrival in Glenbeigh, the local Church, both

hotels and all 3 pubs shut their doors. The Supermarket remains open and

continues to be well stocked. S,D& I managed to hunker down - and,

despite maintaining 2M (6ft) social distance from everyone. We did our

best to make “chicken salad” from “chicken/s*^%” ( you know what I

mean. We managed to have a nice couple of days in Kinsale and a lovely

visit to The Dingle. Now this dreaded “C-virus “ is exploding everywhere. I

decided to try and return to my sweet “Nest” in Oregon. Fingers crossed I

can take flight before Ireland and the US close their country borders.

Chapter 2 will describe the train journey from Killarney to Dublin. Do stay

with me on this weird sojourn S&D have decided to remain on in

Glenbeigh until their original departure date of 3/31. With the assistance of

my fabulous Travel Agent Rana Mize Sprencel I am reserved to fly to the

US on March 25.

Day #3 Covid-19

March 17, 2020 - Irish Style - no pubs open

Glenbeigh, Ireland.. a subdued, soft and gentle St. Patrick’s Day - 2020!

Susan agreed to teach me crochet - I don't think I'll be very good at this -

but why not try..might help fill my days.

Note to all my lovely/beautiful Face Book (FB) friends I want to thank you

for all your sympathy and kind thoughts on the recent death of my sister

Caroline, (RIP March 9, 2020). It’s been a very difficult and emotional few

weeks for me, my siblings, Len, Pat and Bob, and my sister’s family in

Cork, Ireland. The good part of this sad time is we were all together and,

albeit broken hearted, we were able to support each other in our grief. For

me, personally, I was so comforted by all of your texts, phone calls and

sweet notes. I am so grateful for your friendship always, and especially at

this sad time. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. “Gura Mile

Mhaithe go Leir”!

My next few paragraphs will describe “Travel in the Time of Covid” (very

early days) - as I take my return journey back to the US

Day #8 March 24

Bye, bye Glenbeigh. Beginning a two day journey back to the US. I’m

going to attempt to create a series of ”journey posts,”. I am naming this

section “Travel in the Time if Covid-19” - very early days of Covid-19.

“The Train to Dublin”

As a young girl growing up in Cork taking the “train to Dublin” was as

exciting as a “trip to Mars” might have been to American children. So, so

exciting! How times have changed. I fear I regress from my storyline-

Train ride from Killarney to Dublin runs about 5 times a day (maybe only

4).. this train route originates in Tralee. With the exception of

the 07:30h train (who gets up that early in Ireland- except the Yanks) - all

other trains must make a stop/connection in historic Mallow. It is

considered a real aggravation - but in all honesty it is so easy. The

Killarney train stops at Platform 1 then one takes/walks - maybe 5 steps

-across to Platform 2 (I may have the Platform numbers reversed- forgive

this writer/storyteller).. one waits anywhere from 5-8-10 minutes- then the

majestic Dublin train pulls into the platform (this particular train originates

in Cork). Usually both of the trains in this story are crowded with pompous

and important looking business men (latter from Cork), enthusiastic

students and excited tourists from all over the world and of course the

usual dozen or do OAPs (Old Age Pensioners) /traveling on their Free

Travel Passes. Not today! Today was very different. I was one of three

passengers who boarded the train in Killarney and one of about seven

passengers that boarded the “exciting” Dublin train.

On both trains I sat alone in a carriages. No difficulty complying with the

2M “social space” guideline. It was a bit surreal to look out at the beautiful

green fields of Ireland passing by and compare the unprecedented

circumstances being experienced. The total train time for the Killarney/

Dublin train journey is approximately 2.5 hours. No beloved beverage -

“Cuppa Tae & Club Milk” trolly service today. I was a bit disappointed on

that. I love a Club Milk biscuit. Also, there was no sign of the totally

respected and almost feared Train Conductor who always said “tickets

please” before taking ones ticket, looking closely at it and then clipping it

purposely with his important looking clicker.

A few nice touches/moments:

One nice train porter/type did help me off the train with my “bits&pieces” in

Mallow. (No help offered to put my cases on the Dublin train -despite me

wearing my “broken wing sling.

At Dublin’s Hueston station as I stepped off (listening to the familiar

announcement of (“Mind the Gap”), a sweet young girl helped hand off my luggage. She ran and grabbed a trolly for me .. (always keeping her 2MM

“social distance).. I had arrived to a very unusually quiet and somewhat

somber major Dublin train station!

The Overnight Dublin Airport Hotel

Many of my “Travel Career Colleagues” will remember how we dreaded

and tried to avoid our industry hotel /room inspections. Well, for all of you

- this will be a “walk down memory lane”. For the rest of my friends- this

will be b o r i n g.. but it is part of my return trip experience. Let me start

with my rather pleasant Taxi ride from the train station to the Carlton Hilton

Hotel near (sort of) Dublin Airport. I deliberately used a local taxi vs. Uber.

Business is practically dead in Dublin so I though I’d support the old

fashioned Dublin taxi driver. He was super nice. Wanted to know all

about America. About Mr tRump. Very interested in “how” I managed to

get to America in the 60’s. Wished he had a the chance. Great

conversation. The ride cost me Euro 21. I gave him E25. He kept saying

“you are paying me too much” When was this last said to you.

Arrival at Hilton was un-melodramatic. What are now the “ubiquitous”

lines to keep the requisite “social distances” were clearly marked before

reception area. Checkin was easy. Then I was advised neither the

restaurant nor the bar was open. The good news was “Room Service”

was available.

I was pleased to learn I would be able to order a glass of wine - should

that “rare” thought occur to me.

I settled myself down for a solitary evening. For about an hour I listened

to the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) give his National Address to the

county outlying more restrictive rules to “flatten the C-19 virus curve” in

Ireland. It now being 5:30PM I decided on Room Service (RS). Needless

to say the available Menu was limited. I rang RS. Reception answered,

advising they would have RS ring me back. The callback was prompt. I

ordered the Fish&Chips. We had a chat about the wine.

Me: how much is a glass of wine? (SauvBlanc)

RS E7.

Me: How much is a bottle ?

RS: E25

Me: Mmmm - quickly calculating glass price vs. bottle value.

Me: decisively and being the total responsible drinker I am said - I’ll take 2

glasses please!

Food came very quickly which I enjoyed well enough. Not terrific but not

terrible.(Making the best of things). After my Dining I decided to entertain

myself by taking a “hotel room tour”. Then I took a enjoyable bath and

went to bed. Asleep by 11PM.

Another quiet and solo day/evening passed. Fingers now really crossed

flight will leave tomorrow. I had one moment of panic when I looked on

line and saw Aer Lingus (EI) had me reserved in “Coach” for the long flight

to San Francisco (must be at least 10 hours). But a quick text to my most

awesome Travel Agent Rana & Travel Place/Huston resulted in a prompt

response “ Don’t Worry” - you are all set in Business Class - Gasp of

Relief all around. Thank you Rana!

Day #9 March 25th - The return flight to America

Writing at 33,000 ft - My guess we are about 90 minutes to the end of a

very pleasant flight. Not sure how soon when I might loose WiFi

connection. So here we go

We had lift off/wheels up @ 12:39 Irish time. I am one of just 3

passengers in the forward Business Class cabin. I must backtrack a bit on

this “eerie” journey. Dublin Airport was like a morgue. So few people

around. Duty free is CLOSED. All cafes/restaurants CLOSED. Ireland

has these unique arrangement with US Homeland Security whereby you

go through US Emigration/Custom on the Irish side. It was semi-

operational at Dublin Airport today. It’s a great convenience for returning

American tourists in regular time. Let me remind all of us and myself, this

is “The Time of Travel in Covid-19. This, Global Entry - usually available in

Dublin was not available. US Homeland Security operates about 10

Emigration desks at Dublin Airport. Today just one was open. The Officer

told me he was “the last man standing”.

I had to complete a Medical form asking pertinent/usual flight questions. In

addition I had to confirm a certain information, such as:

In the past 24 hours have you had any of the following symptoms?

Fever (100.4 F/38 C or higher, felt feverish or had chills? Y/N Answer N

New or worsening persistent (frequent or continuing)cough? N

New or worsening difficulty breathing? N

I was advised I’d be met by a US CDC/Homeland Security Representative

upon arrival in San Francisco.

The flight Shannon to San Fancisco. I was courteously served a glass of

pre-departure Champagne - I most often call it “Bubbly”. I in my zone for

the next 10.5 hours.

My lovely Flight Attendant- Caroline (same name as my sister 😢 ), has

just told me of my lunch options. I was not sure food would be available on

this flight. I’ve opted for:

Starter: Smoked Salmon

Main Course: Risotto w/vegetables

Delicious meals - especially for airline food

Now for a couple of movies!

Spent last couple of hours engrossed in a documentary on the Chernobyl

Series. Watching such a catastrophe is putting some perspective of our

current crisis.

Overall my return journey from Ireland was exceptionally pleasant.

Honestly, it was probably the nicest day I have had in 3 weeks. San

Francisco, fondly known as “The City” looked beautiful as always upon

our approach to SFO. Our landing was smooth and gentle.

CDC officials met passengers at embarkation. We handed over our pre-

answered questionnaire. My answers were reviewed and I was given a

checklist that advised me to comply with a 14 day home quarantine. I

should take/monitor my temperature twice daily.I I am to contact my

doctor, go to emergency (call ahead first)- if I have any of the following

symptoms:

•Fever 100.4 or higher

•Cough

•Shortness of breath

I must leave my home ONLY to seek medical care.

I was free to continue to my next flight to Portland, Oregon

The good news was because I had cleared US Immigration/Customs in

Dublin I did not have to do so at San Francisco. My luggage was

automatically transferred to Alaska for my flight to Portland. Such a

convenience.

I walked from Terminal (T3) to T2 - about 8 minute walk. Felt so good

after a 10.5 hour flight. SFO was slightly busier than Dublin. I was

surprised to see several restaurants open at T3. At T2 - it was very quiet.

Eerily quiet passing through TSA.

At the American Admirals Club I was 1 of 3 guests. I whiled away about

1.5 hours while waiting for my flight Portland. As a matter of fact the Club

Manager told me as I was leaving the Club they were actually closing the

Club due to Covid-19 for the foreseeable time. Once again I was blessed

with my timing.

Boarding my flight to Portland was uneventful. Ms. Cooney (that would be yours truly) was the sole passenger in First Class. I believe the total flight

passenger count was less than 10. This is Scary!

Baggage Claim Area at PDX found my 2 lone suitcases waiting for me.

Always a relief when that happens. In about 6 minutes I was in an Uber

(private type taxi) with a most helpful driver -Dean- who actually helped

me to take my bits&pieces to the door of my Nest. I made it! I am in my

Nest in Beaverton - a nice suburb of Portland, Oregon

Home, home at last, thank God I was home!

Now for my 14 day Covid-19 home quarantine! I’m pleased to follow the

“social space” guidelines and will do my part to keep us all safe!

Until we all come out the other side of this crisis, be safe my friends.

Day #12-25 - March 25 - April 08

COVID-19 Home Quarantine March -14 Days

I did not leave my My Nest (I affectionately call my Apartment “My Nest” -

being Irish I have a romantic soul), for 14 days in compliance to the

mandate required by the US Center for Disease Control (CDC).

I dutifully took my temperature twice a day.

it was required that my temperature remain below 100.4.

Thankfully my temper remained steady - around97/98 degrees

Neighbors kindly offered and helped me with food/shopping etc.

I stayed busy by cooking (it was fun to experiment with new recipes.

I crocheted. I decided to make Covid Crochet Scarves for Christmas

I participated in several Zoom Happy Hours (ZHH) with my daughter and

friends several times. (Zoom is a online Meeting App)

I read quite a bit. I wrote in my Travel/Time in Covid log.

I watched quite a bit of TV. The news coverage on Covid-19 was

ubiquitous. I faithfully watched the Governor of New York, Andrew

Cuomo’s daily Covid briefings. Covid was ranging in New York. Hospitals

were overcrowded or over capacity. Government assistance was

confusing at best. Each state was making its own rules on regulations,

wearing masks. Desperate searches to find Ventilators continued as well

frantic searches for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for hospital

staff. States were competing with each another for equipment. States

also had to complete against the US Government purchasing attempts.

People were dying everywhere - mostly Elders - those +65 and over.

No one seemed to be in charge. The President (Trump) communicated

often that “everything is under control”...that was NOT the truth.

My Covid -19 “historical” perspective/memories have also been created

from information posted on my FaceBook (FB). Like many others FB has

been invaluable for me. I am/have been to be in touch with friends around

the world. The C Virus is affecting countries in different ways. Many,

including myself have added the App Zoom to our activities. This allows

many of us to enjoy online conversations/Happy Hours (HH), Birthday

Parties and various other activities, such as cooking/book reviews. So

grateful for Zoom. We are very limited in our ability to “meet up” in person -

most restaurants remain closed. Some restaurants are providing “take-

out” menus. Take-out is not a favorite of mine-I prefer to cook.

DAY #29 April 12 -

Easter Sunday Gotta love America.. shelter in place (SIP),stay at home,

stay home-stay safe.. whatever we call the rules / we find ways to

connect. Today Easter Sunday 2020 I enjoyed an Andre Bochelli online

performance from Florence, Italy, followed by “virtual” Easter egg coloring

& Champagne brunch.. so fun & enjoyable. Sharon Hajek, thank you for

including me!

Day #32 April 15

My Quarantine is over. Alleluia! While most restaurants remain closed

and group gatherings are discouraged I am thrilled that I can go out and

take a walk. It feels so good to be outside. More and more people are

wearing face masks. Another note: Nail/Hair Salons are now in lockdown.

Day # 33 - 42 - April 20 -29

The Covid Virus is ranging rampantly in Italy. Frightening news reports

show masses of dead bodies being carted away. The Italian country is in

total lockdown. One bright report shows brave Italians singing Opera

tunes from their little balconies. It shows the spirit is still strong and

showing creative efforts to “stay/be in touch”. Another example of the

strong spirit of many: At 7:00PM, in many cities throughout the US many

are gathering in their streets, apartment balconies and banging

pots&pans, blowing horns, ringing bells to show their support for the

courageous men & women (Doctors/Nurses) who are tirelessly caring for

the growing number of Covid patients. These support efforts are also

happening in many cities in countries around the world.

DAY #48 - May 1, 2020 - May Day!

Portlandia, Oregon.. May Day, 2020. I always love May Day.. to me the

month of May seems to ooze the warmth of the sun, the scents of

blossoms and enhances my friendships. This years May Day is a slightly

sad day for me.

Today, I confess I am missing my sister terribly- May 1st was also my

beautiful father’s birthday. My sister and I would always connect and chat

and share lovely stores our our Dad on his birthday. Robert Speight Sr.

was a highly regarded and respected gentleman and admired by so many.

H was beloved by all of his children ( and especially his grandchildren).

Carol and I loved to talk about “our Dad” - naturally we might even gently

argue over our memories at times. Today I am missing the May Day “trip

down memory lane” with my sister - about our father. Nonetheless, Today

I had a wonderful time wandering through the Lilac Garden at Duniwidy

Park in Portland. The variety, the colors, scent of beautiful Lilacs was a

experience to behold. Regrettably, the gorgeous blooms are beginning to

wane - so you must hurry if you wish to see these Lilacs. Lilacs have such

a short blooming season. I feel so blessed to have learned about this

spot. Thank you Diana Ringle Potts

for the information. Carol , if you are listening, it helps me to believe that

you and Dad are having a great birthday chat together today as you both

sit among your heavenly angels - RIP both of you!

Day #49 - May 2

Received a wonderful text from my daughter, Caragh with an invitation for

Mother's Day -

" Hi Mom,

"Thought we could do Mother/Daughter Happy Hour tomorrow. Would you

be up for that? Below are the Zoom Details to join the call. If you prefer

other time or day, no problem, just let me know.

Love you and hope you are staying safe & "sane" while in quarantine, lol."

Oracle Zoom Conference Details - Invitation from: Caragh Cooney

-Topic: Mother/Daughter Happy Hour Zoom Meeting

-Time: Apr 1, 2020 05

My response to invite :

"Sounds great.. I’ll be there. What’s the dress code

Caragh: " Dress Code - How about Big Hats and Bling"

My response : "Perfect"

Day#53 - May 6, 2020

It’s my birthday - 75 today. Quite amazing really. I am feeling well,

reasonably healthy - given I had 2 Strokes 5 years ago. Thankfully no real

residual damage. I was very fortunate. The strokes were fast/furious and

quickly passed. My doctor said it was a miracle I survived. I do believe

that I had some resulting problems with my speech for awhile. I recall I

had to “slow down” my talking or my words would become “muddled”.

Eventually that difficulty seemed to pass, thank goodness. During the

following medical checkups it was discovered I do now have a condition

called Atrial fibrillation (A-fib). Apparently A-fib is a common enough

condition and can be managed with medication. Thus I now take Pradaxa

-twice daily. Back to my birthday. Due to Covid lockdown (SIP) no

possibility for an actual birthday so daughter Caragh arranged for a Virtual

birthday party for me. About 20 of my friends joined the Zoom

celebration. I bought myself a Princess birthday cake. All the online

guests put on fancy jewelry/crowns. Each person had their personal

cocktail. Stories about Cay were shared - some funny stories for sure.

Everyone joined in a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. All in all it was a

great event - despite Covid restrictions.

DAY #54 - May 7

Oregon - The last Super Moon of the year, the Flower Moon @ 0130h

(1:30am) to night. I went outside Cay’s (My) Nest -last night -at 1:30AM to

see the last Super Mon of the year. This Moon appeared to be ever so

close. Well worth waking up to see!

Day #57 May 10

Cay’s Nest - Oregon, USA. Mother’s Day 2020

Mother and Daughter Brunch

“Always together,

Never Apart,

Maybe in distance,

but never in heart

Just enjoyed a fun, albeit, a “Virtual” Brunch with my incredible daughter

Caragh Cooney! Happy Mother’s Day everyone!🌸 💕 🌸

Day # 58-71 - May 11-24

Between my Birthday and Mother’s Day celebrations I ran into a little bit of

writer’s block” and took a break from writing my Covid historical project.

During this interval of time I kept myself doing simple things such as:

Cooking (made Pesto using my mortar & pestle). I took several summer

walks. Met a nice neighbor who saw me “smelling her roses” and she

generously came out asked if I would like a few roses (I said yes, please

and thank you). Such a nice gesture. I enjoyed several Happy Hour (HH)

Zooms with friends (Sue Caravalho, Bonnie, Diana, Susan D). One of the

Zoom gatherings was an Irish Soda Bread Cooking Demonstration. I

hosted this at Sharon’s request. Sharon invited several of her friends in

the San Francisco Bay Area and a friend from South Carolina to join my

Soda Bread lesson. We all cooked together. Thank goodness. I crochet

quite a bit. I’m crocheting scarfs for Christmas gifts. Not sure yet of the

recipients. I’m still not very good at crocheting but I getting a bit better.

Covid is creating some unusual/unexpected aspects to all our lives

Day #72 - 76 / May 25-28

Oregon, USA .. end of “writer’s block”. Sharing a glimpse at the “new

normal”. Visiting my friend Diana Ringle Potts and her husband Alan

David Potts... and, at MY choice, I brought with me my “personal” dishes/

placemats/silverware (plastic), towels etc. BUT.. I’m also traveling with my

“BBB”, (Baby Bottle Bar).... I’m pleased to say I was able entice Diana/

Alan to join me to enjoy a few French Martinis and a couple of

Cosmopolitans over a few nights..... always followed by Diana/Alan’s

delicious dinners. So nice to enjoy friendship within allowable guidelines. .

We can all do this. Stay safe everyone!

Day #73 May 28, 2020

Jacksonville/Applegate -Southern Oregon .. last relaxing evening with my

awesome friends Alan & Diana. Tonight our HH Signature Cocktail was

the sweet/tart lovely Lemon Drop. My first attempt at creating this

concoction- they were very tasty. Our cocktail was followed by a delicious

Italian dinner - Orecchiette all-a Vodka - perfect lovely accompaniment to

our Vodka flavored Lemon Drops. For me a stay at A&D’s Butterfly Rest -

one of my favorite Oasis-soothes my soul. I feel soothed & rested! Stay

safe everyone

Escapee Confession

“Bless me Father, I have sinned -it’s been so long- I’ve forgotten how long

- since my last Confession”. So speaks the authentic “always live by the

rules & law” Irish, Catholic Emigrant woman -who is currently an

“Escapee“ from Oregon’s “Stay at Home” Guidelines. I’m trusting my

Writing Group with this Confession. At this moment I am alive & well and

drinking my morning cup of tea. I look out at a tranquil garden at my dear

friend Bonnie & Jerry Collins’ mountain cabin in the Sierra Mountains.

For the most part I remain in compliance with all the Social Distancing

rules. My friend lives on 5 acres -with her husband and their 2

Labradoodles so we have oodles of space to spread out.

To the amusement of my hosts I insist on using my own things which I I

traveled with. I brought my own set of dishes, cutlery, towels & bedding.

However I feel much guilt about my break out. Throughout my 7 hour

drive to the Oregon/California (Total drive is 13 hours, border the many (it

seemed like 1,000)signs flashed the words LOCAL TRIPS ONLY -SAVE

LIVES” at me. I almost turned back several time - I felt pretty guilty

“escaping”. On my return (if I’m allowed to return) I’m prepared to see

those same red signs flash the words -FOR SHAME CAY, FOR SHAME

CAY.

This area of California is still pretty much in lockdown. Bonnie and I drove

around the nearby El Dorado Winery Area yesterday. Almost all of the

Wineries are closed. A few were open for “P&P” -Purchase & Pick-Up. 2

Wineries

we’re actually open for tasting (one must buy their own bottle for tasting) and food was being served. In my view both establishments were pretty

crowded. We did not participate- we returned to our elegant isolation.

Well my fellow Writers this is my sin. One good friend in Beaverton has

already read me the riot act on my behavior. I know I own all my actions... however I felt a strong need to make this thoughtful and educated escape.

I do hope my Writing Group will not “shun” me upon my return. Stay safe

everyone!

Escapee #1945202001006

Day #78-May 31

I am at one of my favorite Oasis! The tranquil B&J Inn, Pollick Pines near

Lake Tahoe, California-AKA the home of my great & fond friends Bonnie

and Jerry. This visit is a welcome “Covid-19” visitation spot. This

afternoon we did wander/drive around the El Dorado/Amador Mountain

Winery area - most Wineries are remain closed to Tastings. Some were

open only to P&P (Purchase/Pick-Up) -no tastings and the couple that

were open were “too” crowded for our likening. Nonetheless, this is a

beautiful part of Northern California. I’m happy to be here!

Day # 81-June 3

B&J Inn -an update (Wednesday June 3, 2020). My friends home is lovely,

however, caring for the home/property requires much effort. Yesterday,

was the final, final “burn” day in this California Forest area -which is lushly

populated with thousands and thousands of magnificent and huge trees -

Cedar, Ponderosa Pine, Fir and Black Oak, Due to the deep concern for

forest fires, at this time of the year, in particular, home owners must

diligently make sure property trees are “limbed up” (to a hight of 10-12 FT)

from the ground and all dead/flammable brush must be totally cleared.

This is accomplished by “controlled burning” ( Fire Permit requires by

each property owner). It was interesting to watch Bonnie & Jerry complete

this awesome task. Your truly kept a careful eye on their progress from

“Cay’s Corner” on one of the upper decks. 😎

That was a Hard Day’s Work for Bonnie & Jerry!

At HH I treated Jerry to a French Martini and prepared our dinner of

Butternut Ravioli with Brown Butter Sage Sauce for the 3 of us.

One more day here at this lovely Oasis before heading back North to

Oregon!

Day #87 - June 9

mean my Grey) Locks. Patience my dear you say! 🤫 I’m grateful for

small mercies!

Day #90 -June 12

Cay’s Nest. Life can be full of wonderful surprises. At 0700h this morning

I was awoken by my doorbell announcing a delivery! Really, my goodness

I thought - at this hour of the morning. A rather large box was then

deposited to my doorway. Upon opening I found a “treasure chest” of a

most gorgeous selection of Irish Gourmet delicacies. This glorious gift

was sent to me by my brother Pat, the Storyteller (Pat The Hat)& his lovely

wife Catherine- a belated birthday gift. What a great start to my day I’d

stay. I will share these goodies with those I can see -when we can meet

again! Life is beautiful! 💚

Day #94-June 16

Cay’s Nest -aka - The Mad Hatter’s Nest. I could not resist buying

“another” hat. Anyone getting Married, having a Garden Party, Wine

Tasting? Oh well, I’ll just have to wear it to Safeway, Fred Myers, New

Seasons.

Day #97 - June 19

Cay’s Nest - Woohoo.. I’ve been to the Hair Stylist. First time with Don

Wilson @ Mascola’s Salon. I am very happy. I feel like a new woman -

wish I could go somewhere. Oh, I know - I’ll pour myself a glass of

Champagne and sit in front of my bedroom mirror, flick my hair and admire

myself! A girl has to do what a girl has to do!🍾 🥂 !

Cay’s Moroccan Kitchen Tent -Take 2 -cooking a Berber style Tagine. Its a

long process just to prep the Tagine. Supplies needed -Bathtub,

Paintbrush, Olive Oil, Oven - time expected — minimum 7 Hours!

Day #95 - June 21

Cay’s Moroccan Kitchen - I’m so chuffed with today’s cooking adventure.

I have enough for at least six people. I’m now going to enjoy my

Moroccan Berber Tagine with some Naan Bread and a glass of Bubbly!

Great day!

Day #100 - June 26

Cay’s Nest - Outside.. thanks to my good friend/neighbor I managed to

catch a last glimpse or two of tonight’s stunning evening sky over Bridge

Meadows! Covid-19 makes me so appreciative of these magic moments.

Day #103 - June 29

My good friend Sharon (Hyajk) arrived from San Francisco. She drove

10+hours. Sharon works for United Airlines. Due to Covid-19 conditions

airlines are operating limited schedules these days due to severe drop in

passenger loads.. thus Sharon was unable to get on a flight (non-revenue

status), so she drove approximately 800 miles (one way). So good to see

her. She plans to stay about a week.

We shared HH. It is so good to have a guest. Dinner menu was -

Salmon+Asparagus+

seared Baby Gem Lettuce Wedges, R/W wine. Beautiful evening.

Day #104 - June 30th

Manzanita, Oregon- we “escaped to the beach”. What a lovely day - albeit- a bit overcast here on Oregon’s Manzanita Beach.. a light misty rained out

our “beach picnic”. No problem for this Thelma & Louise like pair.. we

“SIP” at the Manzanita “Black Dog” Winery. Most enjoyable time!

Day #105-July 1

Cay’s Nest - Oregon.. Light Dinner at home tonight. Menu: Escargot ( for

Sharon) Lobster-Escargot (for Cay) Sautéed Prawns with Shallots & Garlic

Butter (for both of us), My Magic Asparagus. We said “no” to Dessert! 👩🍳

👩🍳 ! Always fun to cook with and for my BFF (Best Friend Forever)-

Sharon Hajek!

We spent most of lazy our doing my new Puzzle. It’s a tough one -

challenging but stimulating!

Day #106 - July 2

Wine Tasting in Oregon.. First stop on the Susan Danahey Wine Tour.

Thank you Susan, most awesome Limousine Service. First stop was at

Flaneur Wines in Carlton, Oregon. We enjoyed a delightful lunch at The

Horse Radish. Final stop on our Wine Tasting Tour was at Dundee Hills,

OR. Delicious bubbly tasting (my favorite) at Argyle Winery - Champagne

is my favorite drink.

Day #107 - July 3

My brother Pat’s (Speight) 71st birthday. I set up a Zoom birthday party

for him. It was a “global” event. My brother Rob, who lives in Melbourne, Australia joined in. My birthday brother lives in Cork, Ireland as does my

oldest brother Len. It was the first time our family “gathered” together

since our sister Carol died (March 9th). It was a little complicated to get

the timing right given the various time zones. We all wore our birthday

hats. I had a birthday cake for Pat here in Oregon and Pat had another

birthday cake at his home in Cork. It was a fun day despite it being just

0600h here on the West Coast of the US. After the “Zoom” party we

relaxed and then Sharon and I decided we would have a Portlandia Day.

We enjoyed a great meander around the NE24rd/NW21st areas. No

museums open but enjoyed lovely crystal chandeliers/artifacts at

Restoration Hardware store. We had Happy Hour (HH) at Serratto. So

happy this restaurant was open - great social distance arrangements!

Day 108/109 - July 4/5

Seattle, WA.. Sharon took a “mini-staycation to Seattle. We enjoyed a fun

day wandering around Seattle’s tourist spots - Waterfront, Pike’s Market,

Post Alley. It’s been a while for me to visit Seattle. It is a really “Hip” city

-despite recent Mass Protests & Covid restrictions. Enjoyed HH @ Von’s

Gusto-Bistro -a Seattle landmark - after a walk-through the Gum Walls on

Post Alley! Took an Uber to the Seattle -Ballard Locks Area. We had

Dinner @ Ray’s Boat House It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been to

Ray’s Boat House. Setting is stunning. We had a fabulous evening/dinner.

I highly recommend Ray’s Boat House.. Spectacular view overlooking

Pungent Sound and the majestic Washington Olympia Mountains. Great

Social Distancing and fabulous service.

It was 4th of July , 2020 - while there were no Firework displays this year,

never fear, Sharon Hajek to the rescue! She treated me to a Fabulous

Bubble Blowing display.

Day# 109 - July 5 Sunday morning -

We took the Car Ferry to Bremerton, WA. Sharon and I planned to meet

one of our Palo Alto Batchelor Boys, who now lives in Bremerton, for

lunch. Regrettably we could not meet with Jack (Moynihan) - the Senior

Facility where he resides was in Covid “lockdown”). No visiting allowed.

We were very disappointed as the main reason we when to Bremerton

was to see/visit with Jack. We compensated by doing a little “antique”

shopping. I bought a sweet “Hope Chest”. The top is appliquéd/

decoupaged with beautiful Angels. I bought it in memory of my sister

Carol who died recently (March 9th 2020). RIP. Carol loved Angels.

Bremerton is setting for the movie Officer & A Gentleman - starring

Richard Gere. This movie is a favorite movie of mine. We watched the

movie when we returned to my Nest.

Day #112 - July 8

Cay’s Nest, Oregon Sharon left today, Not easy to say Goodbye. - here’s

a few ways I know how to say goodbye:

Adieu, Arrivederci, Aloha, Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehen, Bon

Voyage, Ciao, Sayonara, Toksa, See You Later Alligator.

We had a wonderful “Staycation” together here in Oregon & Washington

States. Our Covid “bubble” was intimate. Just two BFFs hanging out -

great “chats” - lots of “giggles” - excellent “wine/cocktails/food”. Until we

my mask gift), wash your Hands, don’t touch your Face, just stay SAFE

girlfriend!

Side notes - a couple of evenings we enjoyed HH outside my Nest - just

chatting/enjoying one another’s company. So nice to be able to share such

moments. IsayAMEN!AMEN!

meet again Sharon drive carefully, please wear your Mask (thank you for

Day #120 - July 16

I don’t know who wrote this but SOMEONE FINALLY put into words what

I’ve been thinking these days and I couldn't agree more. Honestly I have

many of these thoughts.

“I’m sick of covid-19.

I’m sick of black vs. white.

I’m sick of Democrats vs. Republicans.

I’m sick of gay vs. straight.

I’m REALLY sick of the media.

I’m sick of the language being used and plastered all over the media.

I’m sick of no one being allowed to think what they want & feel what they

do without offending someone.

I am sick of the people who are out there jumping on the bandwagon to

protest just to cause mass confusion and more hatred and to riot, loot, and

destroy.

I am sick of blaming the world for the sins of a few.

We’re one race = the human race ... & we ALL matter.

If you want to support President Trump, just do it - it’s your choice.

If you want to support Biden, also fine - your choice.

Do you believe in God - great = abundant blessings.

However, if you want to believe in magical creatures that fly around &

sprinkle fairy-dust to make life better = great ... go for it.

BUT, please ... let’s also invest in being mature enough to be able to deal

with the fact that everyone doesn’t have the same exact mind-set as you.

Having our own minds is what makes us all individuals and beautiful.

If you can’t handle that fact, well that's unfortunate.

I don’t have to agree with everything you believe in.

And you certainly don’t have to follow what I believe in.

So, just be a decent human being without being hateful”

[sermon over]

Thanks for reading - that is, if you’ve made it this far.

I enjoyed a great afternoon @ Tumwater Winery!. Thank you Susan

Danahy for the invite. It was delightful to meet Kim & Mary!

Day #121 - July 17

Cay’s Nest or Bar Cay’s - Sparkling French Martinis 🍸 🍸 .. being poured

& 1800h-bring your Martini glass and take one “to go”!

Unfortunately- no guests.. I drank 4 Of these (small) martinis

First online shopping. Ordered a blouse/shirt from Nordstrom’s online. Did

curbside pickup - new way to shop during Covid-19. One orders online,

then arranges to pick-up outside store. One parks in one of several

numbered parking spots - phones the store, opens one’s trunk - store rep

brings out the order, puts into trunk , says thank you, goodby, have a nice

day and that’s it. Very convenient and efficient.

Day #123 -July19

Cay’s Nest .. enjoyed a great Mother /Daughter Sunday Zoom Brunch..

Theme was Sleep/PJ’s & Tacky Jewelry.. Duration - almost 3 hours!

Day # 124-129 No entries

Day #130/137 July 25-Aug 01

Covid escape - Visit to Bonnie/Jerry (B&J inn)

Day #130 -July 25

Drove to California Sierras, not too far from Lake Tahoe! About 91/2 hour

drive. I am happy to be in one of my “Happy Zone”!

Day #131-July 26

B&J Inn -Pollock Pines - Craft Day. Relaxing/enjoyable day .. we made

Lavender Wreaths first, followed by Herb Wreaths. So love crafting with

Lavender. Bonnie and I then did some gentle cooking. I indulged myself in

my favorite pleasure - reading. Book of the trip - Cat’s Eye - by Margaret

Atwood - written in 1988 - recommended as one 7 books that every

woman should read.. interesting read so far...

Tonight we watched the movie “Gone with the Wind” -in honor of Olivia de

Havilland - who died yesterday at the amazing age of 104. She was a

fabulous actress in her day!

All in all an almost perfect day!

Day #132/133 - July 28/29

Took a beautiful drive with Bonnie and Beth to the town of Diamond

Springs. Very fun, interesting day today. More than one unexpected event.

First - Town of Pleasant Valley - visit to a local Organic Farm for fresh

veggies and fresh eggs. I picked up a “free book” and was given a

beautiful sprig of Gardenia - so fragrant.

Second stop - Allez French Bistro for a wonderful lunch. Dined “al fresco”

- beautifully warm day to enjoy the “so Covid safe” dining.

Third stop - trip to The French Quarter in the town of El Dorado.. and

shopping at a fun boutique called Scarlett’s- very fitting as Bonnie and I

have spent 3 evenings watching the movie “Gone With The Wind”. I

found a whimsical item for a certain someone named Caragh Cooney and

for me a great bargain on the $10 rack.

Fourth stop - Annabelle’s - a sweet little Wine/Chocolate spot. Flights of

wine paired with chocolates- Wine is served/sold into little “jam jars” to go

- due Covid-19.

Fifth stop- a friend of Bonnie’s is clearing/prepping a house for sale - we

got to poke around and take whatever we wanted. Guess what (Brid

O’Riordan) - I selected/chose a Teapot and 4 little cups - in Willow Pattern

💙 and a large sparkling crystal pitcher (jug).

Final stop - B&J’s Inn - to enjoy our wine & chocolate pairings.

Another great day in the mountain. Honestly, even in this difficult time of

Covid life can be so good and full of unexpected and wonderful

moments.

Day #134 -July 29

Evening time @ the B&J Inn, California.. another tranquil day in the Sierra

Mountains. Wreath making with Fresh Herbs. We made Lavender

Sachets, peaceful reading (my fav), a quiet walk, delicious dinner (Lamb

Chops/Grilled corn) - nightcap in Cay’s Corner amidst the garden’s light

show. I’m grateful for this lovely day!

Day #135 - July 30

Cay’s Corner @ B&J’s Inn, Sierra Mountains. (10:00P)

I confess I did not do much of anything today. How glorious and decadent

is that. I’m SIP here in the Sierra Mountains- how lucky can a girl be.

Bonnie and I shared kitchen duties -as we always do.. however, to give

credit where credit is due, Jerry did jump in and do the breakfast dishes..

thank you Jerry.

I spent most of the late morning watching the Robert John Lewis funeral

service. Such an honor to see this Lion of a Man be so beautiful laid to

rest (RIP). I just know this huge and humble man is “Dancing With The

Angels”👼 . Dinner menu included Bonnie’s amazing Rotisserie Chicken -

she uses a “secret rub”, Cay’s Brown Butter Sage Sauce over Ravioli and

Salad. Need I say anymore! 🍽

I took a bunch of late evening photos to share with my friends. Tomorrow

Bonnie and I will pack up for our H89 adventure.. First things first , we are

changing our names to Thelma & Louise. Watch CNN.. Stay safe my

friends!

Day #135 -July 31

Another amusing game being played among us adults. It’s a Travel Photo

Challenge (TPC). this is how I am participating and how it works!

Day #1 of TPC

I was nominated for the 10-day favorite travel images. Every day I will

select an image from my travel photos, post it without explanation and

nominate somebody to take up the challenge. That’s 10 days, 10 travel

photos and 10 nominations. Today I nominated Sharon Lucas! My photo

posted was one of the beautiful Norte Dame de Paris. (Will try to do all

Churches- if I can)!

Day #136 - August 1

Road Trip with Bonnie!

Graeagle, California - had a late breakfast/early lunch. Our 1st Stop on the

Thelma & Louise Adventure- so far we have stayed out of trouble

Evening : Written in Dunsmuir, California.. Thelma & Louise Adventure -

we are Alive and Well, not in jail or any other kind of custody. Great day

yesterday.. drove on H89/H49 for about 8-9 hours. A lot of traffic in the

Lake Tahoe Area on H50 - which we were on for the first hour. Then H89N

- very little traffic after that. Passed through splendid foothills, rolling

meadows, sleepy little hamlets. Brunch in Graeagle, meandered though

historic McCloud - an old Logging town .. finally settling into a somewhat

“tacky” albeit very clean Motel of sorts in Dunsmuir. Dinner for me was a

great Burger (Angus beef) and a Beer at the Dunsmuir Brew Pub. All very

sensible behavior.. no sign of Brad Pitt (an Actor in the Thelma

&Louise movie), although my eyes were peeled. (Joke!)

Highlight of the day - accidentally we arrived at an entrance to Lassen

National Park.. the friendly Ranger “waived” the $30 fee for us after asking

if either one of us was 62+.. and we answered we were in our “70’s” Great

moment. Onward and Upward today!

Day #137 -August 2

Final day of the brief T&L Adventure. This day was full of many

experiences. Packed the car boot. A curious meander through and around

Mt. Shasta City.. I think Bonnie -aka Louise has put Mt. Shasta City in her

B- list. Me- aka Thelma has already been there -done that. We then took

a little time to explore Ashland, Oregon. Such a shame the always

magnificent Shakespeare Festival has been cancelled for this year.

(Covid fall out). One other interesting comment - when we began to drive

through Ashland we were surprised at the VERY STRONG odor of Hemp/

Pot in the air. Louise had a mission to acquire a particular brand of oil

(CBD ?) for a friend in California- unfortunately the speciality store was not

open.

We moved on north on H-5 - in search of breakfast ..we settled on

McDonalds just N of Medford - how tacky could we be .. ya gotta eat

McDonalds at least on a road trip.. heads up everyone- seems

McDonald’s has returned to serving breakfast ONLY until 11.. so we had to

settle for “burger& fries”.. later on we found a Truck Stop in Collage Grove

for Ice-Tea .. not a sign of Brad P to be seen.. actually I would have settled

for Harrison F or Sean C..

A camper blew a tire near us in the freeway- the tire was actually on fire

🔥 .. we moved out of the way very quickly. Then we had get caught in an

accident (we were NOT involve) - which caused about 30 minute holdup ..

Ms. B of Waze (our cell phone direction APP) directed us through this. We

finally reached our designated B&B .. it’s a “DDS”.. (deep, dark secret). I

will only share info on this lovely spot personally - for anyone interested...

🤫 . It was a fun, albeit all too brief adventure. Now back to being myself.

Dropped Bonnie at her daughter Karen’s home in Lynn. I happily headed

to my nest.

Day 2 Travel Photo Challenge. My posted photo - The White Dove of

the Desert - my photo was of my favorite church - Tucson, Arizona. I

nominated Diana Potts

Day #138 -166 (a bit out of sequence)

Day 167 - out of sequence update - I will begin to update with “My best/

most interesting” moments from August . Then will circle back to today -

Day 169 - as I’ve gotten behind a bit on my “historical” write-up. Hope to

catch up throughout this week. A couple of notes. I’ve been “multi-

tasking” with this project. I’ve been using many of my FaceBook posts to

keep track of daily life. FB has been a great way to keep in touch with

friends - BFF’s (Best Fiends) and lots of NSCF’s (not so close friends),

especially people overseas. So, today is August 31, 2020. We are

completing another month of the Covid-19 Virus.

Still no approved vaccine available. There is discussion about releasing a

vaccine BEFORE FDA testing is fully completed. This is quite

controversial. I don’t believe I will take the first “vaccine”. I’m not sure.

Here in Oregon we must wear masks in all public areas. Social Distance

is strongly recommended as is the advice to avoid crowds - especially

over 10. I really don’t see very many people. Have not seen my daughter

since February, when she came up to help me - during my “broken wing”

recuperation. I also have not seen my grandsons- Tiernan (almost 18) and

Kalan (15) since Christmas. At my age (75), I am considered “a person of

risk” - so my daughter, Caragh prefers that we keep our distance. As you

can see from earlier entries she and I try to Zoom every so often and we

do enjoy a long winded chat at least once a week. It is very difficult for

many - for many it is quite lonely. I’ve been doing ok. I have a few “down”

moments - but in general, I’m proud of how I am coping. As you haven

seen on some of my earlier comments, I have managed to “escape” my

quasi “lockdown” a few times. Trips to Bonnie’s and Diana’s have really

helped. Sharon came to visit for about 8 days - that was fabulous- we

went up to Seattle. We made a valiant attempt to see Jack Moynihan- but

we could not make it happen. In general it’s tough not to be able to travel.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed I can go to Ireland for my brother Len’s

80th birthday (November 6th). Currently most counties in the world are not

allowing travelers from the US. Some countries allow US travelers,

however, a 14 day quarantine is required upon arrival. Then 14 day

quarantine is required upon the return to the US. I can handle the 24x2

quarantine- but my challenge is “where/how” to quarantine for 14 days in

Ireland. I’m hoping Mary Casey will allow me to do it at her house.

Otherwise I’d have to rent a place - that might be too expensive for me. In

addition, Ireland may continue with their “maximum 6” for group

gatherings- that would really impact - even a small dinner for Len’s 80th.

I’ll wait another few weeks before I spend energy on “what-to-do”. I’m a

little reluctant to “take-to-the-air” and fly anywhere. I have just been

invited to a “big” party in N. Carolina (friend of Sharon’s)-October 11.. I

shall have to “think on this”.

My grandson Tiernan went off to University-2 weeks ago - his school is

Chico State University. Chico had accepted 47% of students for the fall

semester. They accepted the Freshman (these students missed out totally

on their High School Graduation festivities) - so being able to “go off to

College” is a great thing. The Senior class students are also being

accepted. However , sad to say, after just 2 weeks - due to the creeping

cases of Covid-19 among the students- all the resident students have to

vacate their Dorms by Saturday-September 6th. They will have to

continue their studies “remotely”. Where will this end? Will we ever go

back to what we knew - the old normal.

I’m going now gather some of my FB posts throughout the month of

August to update my various activities. I will intersperse some other notes

in between.

Day #137 - August 2

Day 2 of TPC ( Travel Photo Challenge) my photo to was of The White

Dove of the Desert - a most beautiful church outside Tucson, Arizona - a

very special place to me. I passed the challenge on to Diana Potts - my

very good friend- living near Jacksonville, Oregon. I refer to Diana & Alan

(husband)’s home as The Applegate or Butterfly Rest - their sweet little

guesthouse

Day #138 -August 3

Day 3 of the TPC (Travel Photo Challenge) - I posted a photo of a

Buddhist Temple from my trip to Burma (Myanmar). I always prefer to use

the name of Burma! I pass the travel photo challenge to my good /long

time friend Gail Demko (Gail and I met in 1967 -the year I came to

America

Day #139 - August 4

Cay’s Nest... Another 1st Event - at my age - not so many 1st anymore.

For many years I’ve been intrigued about cooking Zucchini/Squash

Blossoms. Today, I decided to teach myself about them and how to cook.

What fun.. so interesting and OMG - so delicious! I challenged all my

friends (that maintain vegetable garden to try this - so worth the effort.

Day 4 of TPC I showcased another church - Our Lady of Loretta - Santa

Fe, NM -and passed the challenge onto my fun friend Sharon Hajek ..

Sharon is quite a few years younger than me - I think she is 58. She is a

beautiful person, is very kind to me and she keeps me young.

Day #140 -August 5

A friend posted the following . Charlie Chaplin is a movie star from the

1920/30/40’s - he is a worldwide legend. The following is a little reminder

of this incredible star. Charlie Chaplin lived 88 years. He left us 4

statements:

Nothing is forever in this world, even our problems.

I love to walk in the rain because no one can see my tears.

The most lost in life is the day we don’t laugh.

We are all tourists, God is our Travel Agent who has already defined our

routes, bookings and directions..trust him and enjoy life

Life is just a journey! So enjoy today..

Tomorrow may not be!

Day 5 of the TPC - today I posted a photo of another stunning Temple

from my Burma trip and nominated my great (another long term friend)

Maggie Cunningham. Maggie hails from Cork City, Ireland, my home town

and country. We were teenage friends in Ireland . We both off to wander

the world when we were 17. She has lived for many years on (and still

does) the Gold Coast in Australia. Despite the distance we remain good

friends. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to visit Maggie a

few times in Australia.

Day #141 -August 6

Cay’s Nest, Oregon. ‘‘Tis the season - ZUCCHINI season. I was gifted a

very LARGE Zucchini - what to do?...Mmmmm....so far I have made:

Zucchini-Blossoms ✅

Zucchini Bread

Zucchini Muffins✅✅

Zucchini-Roasted with Parmesan✅

Zucchini Spirals✅

Today - Zucchini Noodles: I will try my hands to: Angel Hair, Spaghetti,

Fettuccine, -Pappardelle, Lasagna

Am I forgetting anything! Yikes!

Day 6 of the TPC - today my travel photo post is of a beautiful photo from

my amazing trip to Kashmir.. I nominate the challenge on Breda Purcell - a

friend in Ireland. I know Breda through my most long term girlfriend- Mary

Casey. I met Mary in Geneva, Switzerland - 1965 when I was an Au Pair

to a Swiss family. My duties consisted of looking after two children - Eric

aged 4 & Philippe -1 year old and light housework.

Day# 142 - August 7

Day 7 of PTC - Travel photo today is of the Taj Mahal, India- an incredible

experience. I nominated the challenge forward to Jane Gleeson- sister of

my great, great friend Gabriella Rasmussen. Gabriella hails from the UK

(London). Gabriella was our neighbor in San Bruno, CA - the first house

bought by my husband Michael Cooney and me. (1971-1973).

Day #143 - August 8

Day 8 of TPC - Travel photo post today is of The Hermitage, St.

Petersburg, Russia. Another amazing experience. I was introduced to

Russia by Bob Atchison- my very, very dear friend - now living in Austin,

Texas. Bob and I were business competitors in the Business Travel

Business in the San Francisco Bay Area. We sequentially began to work

together (he was my boss) in the development of Apple Computer’s

internal/ global travel program- which was the envy of the industry. For

various reasons we both resigned from the project. We went our separate

ways but remained and continue to remain close friends.

Day #144 -August 9

Day 9 TPC - Today’s travel photo post is of the Pyramids, Cairo, Egypt-

nomination today is passed to Susan Elliott- daughter of my deceased

great friend Margaret Gibbons (Windsor, bear London, UK)

Day #145 - August 10

Cay’s Nest - had a nice day today.. went to my Whiskey Bar

(Bootleggers).. again totally empty bar.. so good for maintaining “social

distancing). Discovered a wonderful

Gin/ Cocktail- Empress Gin & Soda. Home to a delightful “solo” dinner-

Crab Cake, Sizzling Garlic Prawns, Zucchini Pasta w/Garlic Olive Sauce

Frozen Grape& Banana Dessert -(a tiny dap of melted Dark Chocolate)

All quite delicious if I say so myself!

Almost forget - A lovely glass of Pinot Grigio Rose! Recently no contact

with CR... guess he had gone D&S (deep/silent), again

Day 10 - TPC (Travel Photo Challenge.) To recap this project: I was

nominated for the 10-day favorite travel images. Every day I was to select

an image from my travel photos, post it without explanation and nominate

somebody to take up the challenge. That’s 10 days, 10 travel photos and

10 nominations. Thank you Laura Lockwood for nominating me for this

challenge- it was a bit of a stretch at times to choose a favorite

photograph- and also I struggled on the selection of nominees. However,

overall I enjoyed the challenge. It was a fun way to meander down

memory lane and relive fabulous trips and bask in some glorious

moments. I’m ending with my “Soul” country and the land of my birth.

Beautiful Ireland

☘ . I’m “stretching” the rules -a little - by choosing 2 of

my favorite spots in the world. Skelling Rock & Caragh Lake and today I

nominate Mary Lee Halik Heald. ML “declined” my nomination.. I’m

surprised she declined - I have done much of my “interesting travel with

ML and thought she would enjoy the challenge. Perhaps we don’t really

“know” even our closest friends and perhaps we all change over time.

Thus, we must all adjust our tolerance and understanding of our

friendships

Day #146 -August 11

Cay’s Nest: Kamala Harris was chosen by Joe Biden as his Vice President

- I’m pleased with this selection of these two candidates. Joe B is a nice/

honorable man but a bit of a light weight ( reminds me of my lovely father

Robert (Bob) Speight. He will bring back “global respect” to the US - and

Kamala will really boost him up. She is strong, educated and talented

woman -her heritage is Indian/ African-American.. this won’t hurt the

“political ticket”. My toast to the Kamala Harris VP selection - An Empress

Gin & Soda!

Day #146 - August 12

Cay’s Nest.. Dinner tonight was “leftovers”... but.. today - I did make an

Apple/Pear Crumble (free&salvaged apples/pears -found along my daily

walk).. Life continues to be good - especially during this strange time!

Small Pleasures at Little Moments.

Day #148 -August 13

Cay’s Nest - quiet day at home - today I share another version of a long

time favorite song - “ The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. An Absolutely Brilliant

performance by the Boys Choir! BERNIUKŲ CHORAS DAGILĖLIS. I

have to believe these young boys/men had a fabulous time creating this

recording. Definitely worth researching, finding and listening to this epic

rendition of a global favorite tune. I certainly enjoyed it. We

My thanks to Doris Ostendorf, for sharing. (Doris is a lovely English/

Australian friend- introduced to me by my girlfriend Maggie Cunningham in

Australia.

Day #149 - August 14

Friday Night Dinner @ Cay’s Nest -I’m still cooking/eating Zucchini (from

my neighbors garden) - menu tonight:

Zucchini Pizza Bites & Glass of Sauvignon Blanc.. maybe a slice of

Zucchini & Orange Cranberry Cake for dessert. Just an easy & slow

evening!

Day #150 -August 15

Enjoyed Happy Hour with Linda LaBlond @ Cafe Mingo. Met Linda in

Portland when I was living/working @ Tektronix. (I retired from Tektronix 11

years ago) Linda had just moved up here from Marin Country (SF Bay).

Interesting lady, divorced, no children. A bit of a snob - but a sweet snob.

Interesting how paths cross. Linda provided an Attorney that Caragh, my

daughter, used for her divorce- excellent choice. I don’t see much of

Linda - but I do like her. I like her style-classy @ sophistication. We had a

good visit.

Day #151 -August 16

This was a day for memories. FaceBook periodically reposts photographs

from earlier posts. Today’s repost reminded me of my trip to Tuscany -

approximately 5 years back. Enjoyed a great time with 9 others,

Diana& Alan, Rick&Tim, Kat&Jim, Karen&Bill, Heather & Brenda. We

rented a Villa in a Winery. Great experience. I was reminded also of my

dear, dear friend Suzanne Melser. Suzanne died 3 years ago / she was

only 54. This second repost/photo reminded me of that wonderful girl and

our friendship. The photo was of her shoe closet.. she had so many pairs

of shoes.. I used to tell her she was just like Imelda Marcus - wife of a

corrupt President of the Philippines, many years ago. Sweet memory.

Day #152 - August 17 Cay’s Nest. Ladies Night! Dinner with Susan

Danahy & Ms Frida (Susan’ little dog) - a well behaved lady! I cooked a

Tagine—Moroccan Berger style using lamb and vegetables. I love using

my Tagine Cooker. It was a lovely evening!.

Day #153 -August 18

Cay’s Nest. I almost forgot to mention my “knives”. Surely I must be at the

end of my C-19/SIP “to-do” list. I arranged to have kitchen knives

sharpened”--✅ Complete-ThankstothearrivalofNewSeasonsMobile

Sharpening I managed to get this job done last Friday 8/14. I do wonder if

we will all run out of “projects” before Covid-19 comes to an end or we

acquire a Vaccine. Six month now this dreadful virus has continued- how

could any of us have known it would last so long.

Day #154 -156 /August 19/21

Spent a couple of day “sourcing” Empress Gin.. this is wonderful

(magenta color-like) Gin that I discovered at my Whiskey Bar. Very

difficult to find.. but by going online (OCCL), one can see which liquor

store might have which liquor. I finally found a store in Bethany .. about 20

minutes away. This gin is not “cheap” -$38/bottle. Might be less in

California. I will have to check on this. My thoughts center on the

upcoming birthday party for Diana&Alan - to be held at Jim&Kat’s -on

Saturday-August 22. I’ve been asked to make my wildly popular

Bruschetta and a Caprese Salad. Both of these items were fond favorites

during our Tuscany holiday. Both will be fun/easy to prepare.

Day #157 -August 22

Diana & Alan’s 70th Birthday celebration - Take 1

Katerina & Jim. It was a really WONDERFUL dual birthday party night at

Jimbo’s! The food, decorations, and stories of all our travels & travails

were perfect. We recalled some fun/sweet moments of our trip to Tuscany

5 years ago (2014). Guests were Bill&Karen, Alan&Diana, Rick&Tim,

Jim&Kat. Susan was also in attendance- although she did not go to

Tuscany with us. We all want a take a repeat trip.

Day # 158 -August 23

Cay’s Nest... Diana&Alan 70th Birthday Take 2 Brunch Covid-19 style.

Totally Crowd Compliant -small aka intimate group ( Susan Danahy was

one of the 3 few guests). It was important to me to extend a gesture to

D&A - (they are so hospitable when I visit them.

So delighted we could manage a little gathering at My Nest. Loved my 2

“surprise “ 4-footed guests Susan & Diana’s dogs. Can’t believe I had 2

dogs in my little Nest. They were very well behaved I have to say. I must

be mellowing!

Day #159 - August 24 - No Entry

Day #160 -August 25

Cay’s Nest. An another impromptu gathering-Social Distance Compliant

as always - tonight’s was to celebrate my Community Neighbor & friend

Dianne’s Birthday. Dianne is a “fellow Gin” lover so I took the opportunity

to open/share my recently acquired (at great effort) 1908 Empress Gin for

a Birthday Martini Party. Tony, Lidia and Jeff were also guests. It’s been a

long time (160 days) since we have gathered together- not since the

beginning of C-19. We are all a little “anxious “ about any “togetherness”

yet.. but it was wonderful. All you Gin Connoisseurs- do ask/search for

this Empress Gin. It’s almost worth dying for! That’s a bit of an

exaggeration - but it is very tasty.

Day# 161 No Entry

Day# 162 -August 27

Spontaneous but long delayed visit to Portland’s Rose Garden. I

discovered Shakespeare’s Garden a most lovely spot to rest awhile - what

a quiet way to spend an afternoon!

No one can speak or write like Shakespeare!

“ A Rose by any other Name is still a Rose”

“Of all Flowers methinks a Rose is best”.

Portland is known as the “City of Roses” because the weather is ideal for

growing them. The roses were still blooming in abundance and are

stunning in their beauty. I so enjoyed a tranquil stroll through this

peaceful, colorful & oh so fragrant Portlandia treasure.

I also tried to see the Portland’s famous Pittock Mansion - long been on

my “to visit” spot Could not go in today .. Online bookings only at this

time. I will return.

Day #163 - August 27

Community Service Day/Opportunity. My neighbor Larry asked if I could

assist him by picking him up from a local Surgical Hospital. I was happy to

have a chance to help Larry-return a favor - sometime ago Larry picked

me up from Kaiser Hospital after my emergency visit. At moments like this

I’m glad to be living at Bridge Meadows, (I wonder if I’ve explained about

BrM - must verify this)- being able to “help” one’s neighbor is a blessed

thing.

Day #164-August 29

Stay home day - enjoyed a 2 hour phone conversation with Caragh. She

is adjusting to Tiernan being away at Chico University. She and Kalan are

bonding and that is such a good thing. She and Tiernan are very close..

she now has more time to spend with Kalan. We had a great chat. Wish I

could have a 1+1 in person.

Day #165/166 -August 30-31 - No Entries

Day #167 -September 01

We start another month into Covid-19. Who could have imagined this

would continue so long.. Cay’s Nest - Nearby.. my Portlandia Beaverton

“Staycations” continue. I’ve always been a Tree Lover so today I decided

to explore Beaverton’s lovely Arboretums. (An Arboretum is a collection of

trees in a park/like setting).

Today I discovered there are 3 Arboretums in Beaverton. I visited and

enjoyed all three today. Let me tell you a little about them.

1st Arboretum is the Street of Trees Walking Tour along Griffith Drive

-between BVH/SW 5th Street. These mature PNW trees are awe-

inspiring.

2nd Arboretum is at the corner of SW Allan/Alice Lane. A wonderful

selection of trees fills this small Oassis - and albeit a bit noisy due to

passing traffic. This one is now my favorite.

3rd Arboretum is located on SW 142nd/SW Farmington Road. This “tree-

park” is the most recently established Arboretum. Naturally all of the trees

here are very young and still quite small but there lots of opportunity for

growth.

I did enjoy my “local” adventure/exploration, local discoveries today. It’s

amazing what one can find almost at one’s own doorstep. One of the

unexpected blessings discovered during Life in Covid-19

Day# 168 - No Entry

Day#169- September 03

Wonderful HH with my very special friend Charles Holt. Great

conversation about the “Black Lives Matter “ movement, He taught me so

much about what is at stake. I adore Charles. His partner Don is now my

Hair Stylist.

Day#170 -September 04

Cay’s Nest - I was busy today. I fear I must change my recently acquired

title from “The Queen Zucchini” to the “High-Queen Of Pears”. We have a

tree in our Community property that keeps dropping pears on the

driveway. Rather than drive around these pears (or drive over these pears as many are doing) my frugal “cooks” mindset - encouraged me to salvage

these “wandering” pears. I was then “on the horns of a dilemma” - what to

do with these buggers - the results of today’s efforts:

Pear & Rosemary Soda Bread

Pear & Gorgonzola Tart

Pear Liqueur

Pear & Marsala Roasted Pears

“Hail to the Glorious Pear!

Day #171 -September 05

Two sad pieces of news Tiernan has had to leave Chico Uni -due to

Covid-19 outbreak of Covid-19 on School Campus. Poor Tiernan- he got

so cheated of any official High School celebrations - he was so excited to

“go off” to College - and now the College has to close the Campus - for

how long? who knows? The second sad announcement is. $300 million in

debt, the 100 year old Palmer House Hotel in Chicago is closing. It is the

second largest hotel in the city and features a spectacular lobby, arcade,

ballrooms and elevator lobbies. They don't build them like this any more.

It is hard to say how any of the grand hotels of Chicago, New York City

and other big cities will survive not just the Covid-19 pandemic, but the

lasting changes in business travel, tourism, and the workplace. I hate to think that places like this might not find a purpose. I am quite sad at this

news news.. I always wanted to introduce Caragh to the Palmer House in

Chicago... no chance now. The world is changing. What will the end be

like - will there be an end to the Covid-19 virus. We desperately need a

successful and safe Vaccine -but this will take some time.

Day #172/173 -September 06/07 (Labor Weekend)

Very quite holiday weekend for me.

Caught up on writing/ paperwork.

Weather very warm - high 90’s. Higher in San Mateo C’s where Caragh

lives. Real concern about Wildfires in both Oregon & California.

Day #174 September 08

Cay’s Nest - I’m concerned for my friends who may be anywhere near to

the fires raging in both Oregon & in California. It is all so dreadful. My

positivethoughtsandprayers🙏 goouttoeveryone.Iparticularlyprayfor

all of the heroic and brave Firefighters who continue to battle blaze after

blaze - they just must be so exhausted - yet they keep going.

Stay safe everyone - especially Diana&Alan Potts and Jerry&Bonnie

Collins. Both couples live in somewhat dangerous fire zones.

Went to Kaiser Lab for Blood Tests.

Day #175 -September 09

Cay’s Nest - so much smoke outside and very close.. look at this sky .. I

have no idea where/what is causing this smoky/reddish sky. Quite

alarming really!

In between watching news on the dreadful California & Oregon fires today

I tried to keep busy - cooking of course was my answer to my concern.

Continued my cooking journey with The Glorious Pear.

Take 1: Today I made a Rustic-Style Pear,Lemon & Cardamon Crostata. I

have fond memories of my Cooking Lesson on the Italian Crostata, at our

Rome Hotel on the last day/night at the end of our incredible Tuscany trip.

(I can’t actually remember the hotel name - but I’m almost certain you

Diana will remember )

It was a new experience for me to grind Cardamom seeds.

NOTE to self: buy Ground Cardamom.

Take 2: my second act was the decanting (reverse style) of my Pear

Liqueur - after 10 days of fermentation.

It seems a bit trivial to me to be discussing kitchen activities knowing that

some unfortunate people have lost their entire homes during these tragic

fires. Believe me my thoughts were full of this sadness, all day. I’m

pleased to tell you that this evening several of my neighbors enjoyed the

fruits of Cay’s kitchen - it’s good to be able to share.

Day# 176/177/178-September 10/11/12

Cay’s Nest - Praise the Lord our little Community remains safe from the

wildfires that ravage in the area about 45/60 minutes away. At least 2

towns/cities have been evacuated and many more are on “evacuation

alerts”. This is all so tragic. It is still unknown how many souls have

perished in the southern Oregon towns of Phoenix & Talent. I am familiar

of these two town as I often pass through them on my way to visit my

good friends Diana Ringle Potts (and Alan) at the Applegate. These 2

town have vanished- into total cinders. 😢 I’m very glad my friends and I

remain safe. To my many “overseas” friends. Thank you all for your kind

wishes of concern for me, Caragh and her Lads. It’s a bad situation in

California also. Caragh & Lads are safe I’m relieved to say. It’s all a big

worry.

It is incredibly smokey here where I live - the air quality is pretty bad -

around 200 - and is considered very “unsafe”. We are all remaining

“inside” for the most part and must keep our windows and doors shut.

I count my blessings for my (and my family’s) continued safety - I’m

keeping busy in my little kitchen - I’ve plenty of ingredients to work with -

given that I have become a real scavenger- “acquisitions” include “fallen

apples from an “unknown” neighbor’s tree. I’m still gathering a few

“bouncing pears”. Two Community neighbors provide me with seemingly

endless gifts of “zucchini”, and tomatoes - Red and Green. I, in turn return

their generosity with gifts of my “herbs” - thus we all all content. True

Covid-19 spirit of cooperation.

My latest cooking creation - Zucchini Lasagne. Very good and healthy-but

I do prefer the “naughty” Pasta Lasagna best. I was able to share the

lasagna with a few of the Community- they liked it - so we are all happy.

All in all I’m coping pretty well given both the C-19 & the Wildfires. Thank

goodness for FaceTime & Zoom - so good to stay connected. I wish us all

a lovely &safe weekend. We must all look out for ourselves and others.

One quick comment -September 11 was the 19th Anniversary of the Twin

Tower attack - when 3,000 souls were lost. I recall that on that fateful day

I was returning from a trip to Nepal (with Mary Lee)..Our plane could not

land in the US and we were rerouted to Yellow Knive, in the Northwest

Territories in Northern Canada for 4 days. Another story to write about

one day.

Day #179 -September 13

Cay’s Nest.. this morning the smoke/air was unbelievably bad. The AQI

was @ +500 - off the charts. Consequently no outing for Cay today.

Believe it or not streamed a Memorial Mass for a cousin who died some

weeks in Birmingham, UK - he had Covid-19. His name Ted Clifford (RIP),

and brother to my favorite cousin Kay Gorman. The Mass was held at the

North Cathedral, Cork - my family’s local Chapel - literally 4-5 doors from

the house where I grew up. It was a lovely experience- a bit sad for me -

as this is also the Chapel where my sister Carol’s funeral took place on

March 12. Sad day with still raw memories. After that - I said to myself -

Self - what’s on the agenda day? Self replied - of course there’s alway

“my little kitchen”. I planned another “Dinner for 1” (Diana Ringle Potts -

how about that for a title for the Cook Book you keep encouraging me to

write?).,

Dinner for 1 tonight’s Menu was: Chicken Thighs w/Artichoke hearts,

Steamed White Asparagus (one of my all time favs)with Black Truffle

Vinaigrette: Fried Green Tomatoes a colorful plate for sure.

Dessert - Several spoonfuls of Mint Chocolate Chip Ice cream- I agree

totally “so bourgeois” - but delicious - I used a “long” spoon. Tonight let us

all pray for safer air tomorrow and an end to any pending/remaining

wildfire evacuation orders. Last but not least how about a huge shout of

appreciation for all those amazing Firefighters- what Hero’s!

Day #174 - 202 /September 15-October 5

It’s not easy to keep going with this historical diary on Life in the days of

Covid 19. I will do my best to keep going but this quasi lockdown is getting

old. I’m pretty proud of myself on how I’ve coped so far but I’m getting

restless. I’m sure I’ve whined about the fact I have not seen my

grandsons Tiernan & Kalan since Christmas. Nor have I seen my daughter

Caragh since February. Stay tuned I’m almost certain I’ll drive down to

San Mateo next week for Tiernan’s 18th birthday. I’ll stay in a hotel and sit

“6 ft” away at the “Hee Haw” party -which will be held outside. I dread the

drive- about 12 hours each way.

I’ll just have to take it slow and easy. Ok .. so now I will update this journal

with snippets for the past 2 weeks -which I might/should have mentioned I

take from my FaceBook posts.

Day #180 -September 14

Spent some time at Kaiser Lab. Blood draw/tests in preparation for my

“virtual” Doctors appointment (Dr. Kelly Block)tomorrow.

Day #181 -September 15

1st Virtual Dr. appointment. Due to Covid, most non-C-19 medical

appointments are being held via the Internet. I’m not 100% sure I support

this method of care. I’m ok with Q/A with medical staff over the Internet-

but how can they really check you out effectively over a computer . This

appointment was necessitated by a recent Bone Density Test I had to take

(age related). I believe it was also suggested as a result of my broken/

fractured upper right arm (Jan 2).. now it has been determined I have a

27% chance for more fracture. Apparently that a very high percentage of

risk. At the end of the day I must add another medication to my pill taking

regimen. I don’t like the idea at all - but it must be done. I like Dr. Block

and I trust her judgement so I will comply with her advice.

Day #182-September 18

Another medical event. Drove to Kaiser Hospital in Hillsboro to have my 3

month “ear-wax” removal experience. Seems I have extraordinarily tiny

ear canals and I also develop high levels of wax that have to be physically

removed with a pretty scary little device. As I am now on a 3 month

schedule with the lovely Nurse Catherine it is almost a painless

experience. Thank you Catherine.

Day #183 - September 17. Today’s must be a “Music” appreciation day.

My good friend Maggie Cunningham posted a video of the romantic song

“I’ll never love again” definitely an “oldie” but a “goodie” - sung by the

infamous Tom Jones. Not bad for an “elder” citizen. Later in the day I was

enthralled to listen Hauser play his Cello to the magnificent sound of

Nessun Dorma. Hauser plays beautiful music and he is gorgeous to look

at too. He often plays outside - nestled in stunning scenery- and always

barefoot. This piece Nessus Dorma was released by Hauser

Jan 10, 2020

Totally different style -than Tom Jones for sure but fabulous.. I love music - while I don’t carry a note in my body, everyday I sing out loud and play the

Harp beautiful in my mind’s eye! 🎤 🎼 🎶 🎵 !

Day 184 - September 18 .. I played a little game on FB today .. these little

games/posts are shared by various participants.. supposedly these sites

are “baits” to try and capture your personal information. I don’t know how

true that is. Anyhow here is what was revealed about me today - based on

my FB profile..

Not a bad revelation- fairly accurate I’d say!

I also enjoyed another Hauser performance. It was Hallelujah

Beautiful.. I love how Hauser almost “caresses” his Cello! I shared with

my friends.

Cay’s Nest - The Rain is lovely, the Sky is becoming clearer as is the air

quality -AQI 133 right now.. so much better. I even saw a little Sun

yesterday. I’m staying busy with my reading, writing, even a little

crocheting 🧶 , and of course a little cooking in “Cay’s Citchen”. I continue

to try to “create” recipes using the benevolent gifts from Nature and from a

couple of members of my Community.

Significant Entry. RBG died this evening.

Rest in Peace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A tiny GIANT What an

incredible lady! RBG did so much for women and for men. Such a loss to

us all. This will have major impact on our already crazy political scene.

Day #186 - September 20

Numerous tributes being written about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. I’m

sure others will be sharing their thoughts on this huge loss. She did so

much for so long - let’s all watch over Justice Ginsberg until she is laid to

rest!

Day #187 -September 21 received my Flu Shot & my 1st of 2 required

Shingles Shot.

Great consternation about the replacement for RBG. Seems this Giant

Justice has written that her most fervent wish be that her replacement not

be sworn in until our next elected President 0n January 20th. (Hopefully

not by President Trump).

Day #191 -September 25

Cay’s Nest...Happy Friday. Played Pioneer Woman Cook yesterday.

Nothing like touching nature. Everyone, enjoy your weekend and please

stay safe and let’s continue to look after each other.

Day #192 -September 26

Today is Beautiful Daughter Day. Happy Beautiful Daughter Day - Caragh

Cooney, you are my life’s joy!

Day #194 -September 29

Let’s all sing along with the fabulous Willie Nelson - Willie wrote a new

song “Vote ‘Em Out”. Most importantly- VOTE, VOTE, VOTE

Day #195-196 -September 29/30

Cay is at the Applegate - I’m Surviving.. oh .. so I escaped again.. thank

goodness. I’m spending a few days with another absolute Irish renegade..

Susan Danahy... she is dog sitting the beautiful Leda for Diana& Alan. I

thought why not “help out”.. not exactly, it’s all a lot about life’s

opportunities.. having a great time at the Applegate. Susan and I are

“merging” into temporary housemates. it’s also pleasant. Enjoy your

holiday Diana and Alan... your beautiful home is in safe hands.

Day #197 - October 1,2020

Applegate Valley, Oregon..this evening came to a close with Susan

Danahy and myself “howling” at a beautiful Full Moon.. I tried to get Leda

to “howl” with us .. but no luck. I had a lovely day with a fun trip to the

sweet town of Jacksonville.. tried on at least 4 “ gotta buy” pieces... but

have so far refrained from purchase .. I don’t leave until Saturday, so there

is still time. Tonight our current President has tested for Covid-19.. what

can this news mean for us normal citizens.. I dread to think.

Good night good night, good night moon 🌙 !

Not to forget .. wildfires are raging in N California.. in the beautiful Wine

Country- towns like Napa/St. Helena/Sonoma are right smack in these

dreadful files . The stunning Meadowood Resort Michelin star restaurant

and many of the lodges have been burned to the ground. So tragic.

Day #198 - October 2

Applegate Valley, Jacksonville, Oregon.. it seems somewhat trite to write

about “normal day” activity.. but .. life must continue- even though it is hard

for me. Our country’s President is on his way to Walter Reed hospital..

God Speed he will be OK... in the meantime I just must go on with my day-

to-day life. I had a lovely, calm day at the Applegate - sharing time with

my friend Susan Danahy.. at the home of our mutual good friends

Diana&Alan’s home. We picked apples, we BBQ’d (great job Susan)..

drank bubbles and listened to beautiful music by Joshua Bell. Gosh, what

could/might happen in the USA. Sorta scary all around! God Bless

America!

Day #199 -October 3

Goodbye Applegate, Susan, Leda, Ms Frida..headed home to My Nest. A

quick stop in Jacksonville.. I succumbed to temptation and purchased 2 of

the “try ons”. I’m happy I “gave in”. Home drive not so bad .. a little less

than 5 hours. Quickly rustled up an Apple Crostata to take to Dinner at

Lidia and Tony’s. Diana made her special Korean Noodle dish that was

featured in the blockbuster movie Parasite (winner of 2019 Academy

Awards). Jeff was at dinner also. Easy conversation and much gossip

about neighbors.. mostly good gossip. Next entry will be Day 200 of this

dreadful virus Covid-19. Unbelievable!

Day #200-229 -

October 4-November 01

Big time catch up on my Covid-19 Historical Review. I’ve just turned on

some music on iTube - an App on my TV. I’ve become a big fan of Hauser.

Hauser is a marvelous Cellist- from Croatia 🇭🇷 . Exquisite music - perfect

support for writing.

Ok .. I ended my review at Day #199 - so I must fill it about 29 days of

activity. Who ever thought this Covid-19 virus would last such a long time.

So far I have escaped this dreaded virus. I have managed to take a few

road trips - to Bonnie’s/California Sierra mountains and to Diana’s at the

Applegate/Southern Oregon. No flying yet - but I did drive to my daughter

Caragh’s home in San Mateo for my oldest Grandson’s 18th birthday. The

US 2020 Presidential Election will take place this coming Tuesday,

November 3rd. My vote is for former Vice President-Joe Biden. His

running mate is a lady named Kamala Harris. I’m not 100% over the

moon about Biden (he is 78 and a long, long time politician) - but he is a

good man as may be able to bring some calmness to the country - tRump

has been so divisive in so many ways. Biden might have a 6-10 point lead

but his victory is not a sure thing. Many are anxious. Well - on to my

various daily updates - many of which will once again be taken from my

FaceBook postings.

Day #200 - October 4th

A perfect entry for Day 200 of living with this pesky Covid-19 Virus

This FB post for today reflects a performance of Swan Lake by Hauser.

This incredible music featured a background of Swans serenely floating

down a gently flowing river. Why was I drawn to this scene, I adore

Swans. Many years ago my beautiful father Robert Speight used to take

my recently deceased sister Carol (RIP), and me to feed the Swans most

Sunday afternoons. It seemed the Swans were always waiting for us (my

father told us they were waiting for us - and we so believed it to be true).

Thus he created an everlasting love of Swans for both my sister and me.

Hauser -is very handsome to look and his music is very pleasant to listen

to.🎶 🎼 🎵

Day #201 - October 5

Cay’s Nest... I awoke to another “NND”.. “Nutty News Day”. Two choices I

thought. Go back to bed or perhaps why not revisit my childhood and

have “A Soft Boiled Egg”- with “Crusty Soldiers” for breakfast. A really

brilliant idea if I might say so myself. Delicious - Simple Pleasures. Now I

can enjoy the day! I wish Happy Monday/Week to everyone!

Day #204 - October 8

A FB friend (can’t recall which FB friend - I should have noted the name -

sorry) posted this article today - the Story moved me so I’d thought I’d put

it into C-19 perspective.

The telephone rang. It was a call from his mother. He answered it and his

mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday."

Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly

remembering his childhood days.

"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of

him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.

"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were

doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the

fence' as he put it," Mom told him.

"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.

"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make

sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said.

"He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this

business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he

thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his

hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no

children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night

before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the

old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused

for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap

through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered.

Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack

stopped suddenly...

"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

"The box is gone," he said.

"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must

have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me

was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack

remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser

family had taken it.

"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.

"I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from

work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required

on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within

the next three days," the note read.

Early the next day Jack went to the post office and retrieved the package.

The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years

ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught

his attention.

"Mr. Harold Belser" it read.

Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There

inside was the gold box and an envelope.

Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett.

It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter.

His heart racing, as tears filled his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box.

There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.

Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the

cover. Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your

time! -- Harold Belser."

"The thing he valued most was my time!"

Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared

his appointments for the next two days.*

"Why?" Janet, his assistant asked.

"I need some time to spend with the people I love and say I care for," he

said. "Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!"

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the

moments that take our breath away."

Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100 percent true.

1. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.

2. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't

like you.

3. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.

4. You mean the world to someone.

5. If not for you, someone may not be living.

6. You are special and unique.

7. Have trust sooner or later you will get what you wish for or something

better.

8. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still

come from it.

9. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a hard look:

you most likely turned your back on the world and the people who love

and care for you.

10. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.

11. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the

rude remarks.

12. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much

better when they know and you'll both be happy.

13. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are

great.

To everyone who read this just now....

*"Thanks for your time."* 😊

Day #205 - October 9

Cay’s Nest ... easy week for me. Highlight was a lovely walk through the

beautiful Tektronix campus grounds of my pre-retirement place of

employment. Life was so busy during those days.. I rarely took the time to

just stroll among the campus and admire the majestic trees. So glad to

take the time now - so delighted to take this walks - It’s wonderful to

wander in solitude - and reflect on times gone by. Totally “ social distance”

compliant. Summer has faded somewhat- signs of fall everywhere. The

air is exceptionally fragrant.

Happy Friday. I wish everyone a soft, gentle, tranquil and most

importantly a SAFE weekend. 💜

Day #210 - October 14

California - Bay Area. Drove 700 miles and 11.5 hours to the San

Francisco Bay Area - for my Grandson Tiernan’s 18th Birthday- next

Saturday, October 17th. I checked into my hotel -Fairfield Inn. I am one

tired Granny.

Recap of drive from Oregon to California.

It is not easy to Travel In The Time of Covid. It. It is not so easy . This is

my first time to visit the San Francisco Bay Area since Christmas past. I

drove from my Oregon Nest last Wednesday October 14 to a hotel in San

Carlos, California - an 11.5 hour drive.. yikes... I had intended to say o/n

partway- but it was a beautiful day and once I reached Red Bluff - a likely

o/n spot - I was feeling pretty perky so I asked myself “why not just keep

going” - myself answered saying “you can do it”.. so back on the road I

went. All in all the drive was pretty easy - that is until I reached the San

Mateo area of H101. Major freeway construction on all of 3 possible exit

points I could take to access my hotel... crikey.. no exit open until I got to

Redwood City - then I had to head back via a frontage road to get to my

hotel -arriving at 9PM. Gosh I was one tired puppy. I slept like a baby.

💤💤

I came to the Bay Area to attend my older grandson Tiernan’s 18th

birthday. However in the interest of Covid-19 safety my attendance at the

planned Hee-Haw outside shindig could only be a combination of virtual

albeit visual. Caragh and I agreed it was not wise for me to stay at lovely

her home - thus the reason for a hotel stay.

Hotel stays are not what they used to be -B/Covid 19.

No restaurant/bar service.

No room service for food or refreshments.

No maid service-only for stays

over 5 nights ( I’m staying 5 nights).. I loose!

-Towels/ wash cloths/bed changing by request only.👎

No glasses (not even plastic kind) available - Paper cups/plates only.

Coffee pot in room -but coffee/tea /sugar/creamer on request only.

However as most of you know I always travel with my own tea - I win 👍

Gym open 8-4 daily but only by appointment-1 hour increments 2 persons

allowed only in Gym. I’ll forgo the Gym - leave space for someone else 🤪

Swimming pool is open / but again only by appointment -again by 1hour

increments-only 1 person/1 family at a time.

It is so hot. Weather temperature running 90-92 degrees. Way too hot for

me 🥵

Day #211 - October 15

Enjoyed a wonderful HH visit with Caragh & Lads Totally “C-19”

compliant- no touching/no hugging. 😔 The San Francisco Bay Area is a

most incredible spot. So beautiful, so wondrous, so expensive. Hard to

know who can even think about living here. I’ll write my thoughts over the

next few day. So wonderful to see my daughter Caragh and my amazing

Grandsons: Tiernan (will be 18 in 2 days) and Kalan who is 15.

Day #213 -October 17

San Mateo, California.. Tiernan’s 18th Birthday.. Fun party has been

arranged by his Mom, Caragh Cooney. Western Theme. Hee-Haw!

Caragh set up a “Cay’ Corner” for me. (I brought my own personal bale of

Oregon Hay). Cay’s Corner was set up well away from everyone - always

10ft+ at least. I was totally masked -doubled masks (cloth mask and face

shield.)

Party was a real hit. Caragh is an amazing Hostess. I’m so proud of my

daughter.

Decor included: Barrels of Hay brought in from Half Moon Bay, Fun Dunk

Tank for the teenager. Margarita Machine, Cowboy Hats, Toy Guns, Sheriff

badges, bandanas, Blow up Pony - OMG it really was like a scene from

the OK Corral. Plus a short but great music concert!

It was tough not to be able to hug/kiss-kiss my Daughter and Grandsons. I

elected not to reach out to my usual Bay Area friends. I thought it best to

err on the side of safety. Next time!

I doubt I’ll get down here again to see my family before the Springtime.

Let’s hear it for a vaccine. A totally approved and safe vaccine. So

needed,

I head back north to Oregon tomorrow. I’ll overnight in Santa Rosa or

Sonoma tomorrow- and hopefully stay at the Applegate for an o/n (maybe

2) with Diana&Alan. I’m not real jazzed about the long 700 mile drive - so

breaking the journey will make it more easy for me to cope with.

Day#215 -October 19, 2020

California (Northern).. Travel in the time of Covid-19

I begin my return journey back to my Oregon Nest. The return drive will

take place over 2-3 days. Today the first leg of my drive was from San

Mateo ( a quick stop to my daughter -I fear it will be another long while

before we see one another again). Then I drove to Santa Rosa. What an

extraordinary/fabulous drive -approximately 67 miles up what is

considered one of the most beautiful freeways in the US-H-280. At San

Bruno we became shrouded in San Francisco’s mysterious fog. I love this

magical fog. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve seen it.. then just as quickly-

the fog disappeared only for it to return again as I drove over the beautiful

Golden Gate Bridge. I was mesmerized. This fog can be so errie, so

Halloween’ish (is that even a word)..the bridge lighting cautioned “heavy

fog”.. then right at the center of the GGB glorious sunshine miraculously

replaced the magical fog. I so appreciated the whole contrasting

experiences. After a short business meeting in Santa Rosa (checked out

a possible Senior Living spot) the second “lap” of my drive took me

through the beautiful rolling hills of the North Bay. It is tragic to see the

damage that has been caused by the recent California wildfires. Reports

say the wildfire is just about 100% contained, thank goodness. Cleanup

continues and will continue for some time to come. It broke my heart to

see the remains of homes/wineries burned to the ground. Many acres of

vines either totally burned or badly scorched. What will become of the

2020 vintage. Loud praise for the Noble Firefighters who held these /Santa

Rosa/Napa/Sonoma fires in check. Awe inspiring efforts.

On the good side I am pleased to say my hotel experience in Sonoma has

been excellent. Service by staff and albeit limited restaurant service has

been terrific. The town of Sonoma appears somewhat “hushed” and

“discreet. However, it was a Monday. Upon inquiring about the current

business level I was advised the previous weekend was quite busy much

to everyone’s relief. I take this moment to encourage anyone who can do

so to come on up to the wine country. These business need all the

support they can get to try and recover from the effects of both Covid-19

and the Wildfires. Tomorrow I will continue “northward”. The 3rd lap of my

homeward bound drive is expected to take about 6 hours - for an always

fabulous stay at the Applegate, Oregon. My fingers are crossed I can

keep to my ETA in time for HH. Thanks for sharing my journey with me as

I head back to my Oregon Nest

I’m delighted to overnight in Sonoma.

I like my Hotel - The El Dorado - right in the beautiful Sonoma Square and

I know from my Sonoma experiences the hotel restaurant is excellent.

Although I’m tempted by my Patio view of “ the girl & the fig” - across from

my room! Mmmm always so much to choose from in the Sonoma/Napa

area! I eventually chose “the girl & the fig”

To all my Wine Connoisseur Sisters -“the girl & the fig” says “hello”.. I’m

have having my all time favorite dish - Duck Confit Sonoma style. I just

could not resist. Paired with a delicious glass of Roederer Estate NV Brut.

Let’s all try to come here together to the Wine Country -as soon as we

can!

9:PM’ish Sonoma , California. El Dorado Hotel - I sat at a sidewalk table

In front of hotel. Last stop before beddy-byes. Having a glass of

Champagne 🥂 and my favorite Dessert. Not really on the Dessert Menu

- but I talked the waiter into improvising.- Diana -I almost asked to go to

the kitchen and pitch in and show the Chef “how to”- I’ve been known to

do that... 🤪

On the Menu was Apple & Cranberry Crisp with Green Apple Sorbet. I

absolutely adore Apple Sorbet... so the most accommodating Server -Matt

- agreed on my request to “hold the Crisp” but double down on the Green

Apple Sorbet and generously top it with a double shot of Calvados to

create “My perfect Dessert” Apple Sorbet & Calvados. I’m was in heaven. Big tip for Matt. I will certainly sleep soundly tonight. I have more words to

share on my drive today. Might get to writing it tonight if I make it up the

spiral staircase to my room and before crashing. Stay with me.. it’s worth

reading - if I may say so myself. Completed journal and included in the

memoir.

Day #216 -October 20

At Diana&Alans, The Applegate, Jacksonville, Oregon. As always, I was

warmly welcomed by the friendly proprietors Diana&Alan upon my arrival. I was greatly surprised to see another VIP guest.. the handsome, debonair

and the one and only Rick Togiai. HH was shared on the cozy deck. Then

we enjoyed beautiful sunset skies and a delicious dinner. Alan BBQ’d

Wild Alaskan Cod. Diana served delicious side dishes. The Pièce de

résistance -Dessert - a generous slice of Diana’s homemade Apple Pie -

made with “Honest-to-God” freshly picked apples from the property’s very

own apple orchard 🍎 🍏 . Vanilla ice served upon request. 😋

Thank you Diana & Alan for a delightful evening and for hosting me once

again!

Day# 218 October 22

Cay’s Nest, Oregon. Wrap up on my Road Trip. My last day/evening at

the Applegate was a gentle.Diana & Rick and I pampered ourselves with a Deluxe Pedicure at Diana’s Nail Salon. I can’t recall the name of the Salon ( shame on me), but this is surely the most Covid-19 compliant Nail Salon.

Hand sanitizing Sanitizing required upon entry, written personal contact

details a must and individual clear screens protect each customer from

his/her nail technician. Most impressive. Our “pampering” was followed

by a meander through Harry & David’s - most famous for their incredible

Pears.

Once again, our always lively & fun HH was held on Potts’ comfortable.

There was a slight bit of Autumn chill in the air - which was offset with the

heat of the outdoor fireplace. Dinner was a delicious and comforting Pot

Roast with the usual accompaniments. We ended the evening sharing a

lovely drink of Alan’s Irish whisky -Jamison!

Thursday morning I woke to a chilly morning - it was no warmer than 40

degrees -a big change from earlier in the week. I bundled up and “hit the

road” for the final leg of my journey North to my sweet Nest. One sad note

, once again I passed through the towns/cities of Talent & Phoenix,

Oregon - so decimated by the recent Wildfires. As I drove through these

areas mythoughts reflected on where the inhabitants of all the “burned to

ground” homes, RV Parks and businesses might be? Again I am in awe of

the brave, magnificent efforts of Firefighters that halted this terrifying fire

🚒 . Very sobering thoughts.

After 5 hours of driving I was safe in my Nest. I drove 1,450 miles in total

on this road trip. I will/must now “self-quarantine” for at least 10 days just

as a safety precaution.

Day #220 - October 24

Cay’s Nest -Election 2020. My completed ballot is ready for Drop-Off! This

a recoup day. Not sure I want to do the Oregon/California Trail trip again

for a while . Perhaps in the Spring. Let’s hope Covid-19 is well under

control- maybe over - although unlikely over - by Springtime. We can

hope, can’t we!

Day#221 -October 25

Cay’s Nest... made a Apple Spice Cake today... couldn’t help adding a bit

of “ad lib” to the recipe.. hated to waste the golden raisin rum “soak” so I

poked some holes into the warm cake after it came out of the oven and

poured the rum into the Apple Cake.. Figured it could not hurt the apples,

raisins, pecans and spices. Right! Have a great week everyone . Stay

calm.. 9 Days to the big “E” day! I completed my Voting/Election ballot.

Slipping out of my “road trip self quarantine” to drop off my ballot

tomorrow. 🇺🇸

Day# 222 - October 26

Cay’s Nest

Icastmyvote!GoJoe&Kamala🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Day#223 -October 27

Cay’s Nest .. just about ready. The “odd couple” Susan Danahy & I are

sharing dinner tonight - and of course Ms Frida! Susan has put her home

for sale. A big decision for her.

Day# 226 - October 29

Cays Citchen/Nest. Well , it’s been a long time since I made Boeuf

Bourgogne - a la Julia Child. What was I thinking 🤔 - I forgot how long it

takes - and one really shouldn’t miss any of the steps - Julia would never

cut corners. It took almost all day-start to finish. Throughout the process I

did wonder what the famed Chef Julia might have thought of the modern

Crock Pot/Instant Pot utensils being used by most cooks these days.

Day# 227 -October 30.

Cay Nest-Happy Halloween to all the Goblins - young and not-so youngest

at heart! Did you know that Halloween is considered the Celtic New Year -

dating back to the Druids - so dress up, kick-up your heels and enjoy

yourselves -let yourselves be susceptible to the power and influence of the

unseen 👻 .I enjoyed a fun evening at my Nest last evening - shared a

pre-Halloween Dinner with some good friends.

Menu was Halloween theme.

Appetizers

-Witches Fingers, Gorky Eye Balls, Cheese Brooms, Spider Black Bean

Dip

Main Course

-Boeuf Bourgogne (aka My Beloved Concoction), Ghost Potatoes, Salad

Desert

- Spooked Spiced Apple Cake w/Caramel Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream

Day# 228 -October 31

Cay’s Nest .. Halloween Party for the children at my Community. An

outdoor activity allowed an opportunity to Volunteer!. Little kiddos love to

“dress up”, gave them a chance to “parade around in their finery”, and

most of all “accept their Halloween Candy” - which they do sure love.

Covid-19 limited our usual volunteer efforts of “putting on the Ritz” for our

annual Trick or Treat event. Thus we Community Elders adjusted the

theme to “Elders will bring the Candy to the Children - instead of Children

coming to the Elders. It was all great fun - Elders and Children really got

“into the Spirit”. The children’s costumes included: A Rapunzel, A

Superman, A Batman and A Vampire. The Elder’s costumes included:a A

Musketeer, A Royal Queen and of course we had a couple Witches (one

was me The Irish High Witch Cay).

I do appreciate the “purpose” of the Bridge Meadows message and I

continue to like living within this unique Inter-Generational Community.

God Bless us all!

Day 229 - November 1, 2020

Cay’s Nest.. DB the “Day Before”. the Election - the election to “Sooth/

Save our Souls”. I feel like I am precariously standing on a cliff edge. Of

course I looked for comfort and calmness in my “Citchen”. I put my head

and heart into first time efforts in making Green Apple Sorbet. It was just

what the Doctor ordered. I’m pleased as “apple punch “ with the results. -I

think! My BFF Sharon Hajek will visit later this week and will be my

“Official” taster!

Day#231 - November 3,2020

2020 Election Day - a momentous day for sure. This is a very contentious

election. Donald Trump (Republican) - hoping for a second term. Joe

Biden (Democratic) is the contender. I’m voting for Joe. It’s a tight race.

I’m at odds with my daughter on this matter a she is voting for rTrump - as

is my grandson Tiernan - he turned 18 on October 18. This is his first

election. I don’t really understand their choice. tRump is very much a

crude, racist man and so disrespectful of woman. I’m ashamed I

attempted to try and influence Tiernan to vote for my guy - but I’m proud to

say Tiernan said his “integrity was not for sale” - such an honorable young

man. I fear I regress so here I am at my Nest with great anxiety.

“Breath in, Breath Out”. No TV for me today - until approx 4:30. Had a

Manicure/Nail treatment @at 3PM - to relax me somewhat. Today I’m all

“Pearled” up in honor for our revered RBG. It’s going to be a long day and

probably a longer night! Fingers & toes crossed.

Day 232 - November 4th, 2020

Day after election..no winner called. Could be Joe...but the election race is very tight. Might take a few days for results to be known. My friends and I

are very anxious. I’ve said that if tRump wins I must leave the US for 4

years. Problem is where to go. Due to the high level of Covid-19 cases in

the US and the lack of cohesive government management of the virus

Americans are not welcome anywhere in the world with the exception of

about a dozen or so 4th/5th world countries where I would not venture to.

So the waiting continues as I bid Good Morning to my FB friends..Time to

listen to Hauser. This beautiful music will calm my breathing. I slept

fitfully last night. How did others sleep, I wonder? Another long day

ahead. The word for today is Calmness!

Cay’s Nest - evening time. Getting ready for Sharon Hajek’s (from San

Francisco) visit tomorrow. Such a fun friend and such a lovely person!

Sharon has done a little travel these past few weeks - to Chicago/South

Carolina. She has taken a Covid-19 test and results are thankfully

NEGATIVE, Hope Sharon likes Roasted Eggplant Parmigiana!

Day 233 - November 5,

Sharon Hajek is here! Welcome, welcome. I’m looking forward to several

fun filled days with you Sharon. Thanks for keeping me “off the cliff edge”

as this long drawn out Presidential Race comes to its honest & free

conclusion.

Day 234 - November 06, 2020

Len’s birthday. My darling older brother is “80th” birthday today. I am sad

not to be in Cork, Ireland today -with my brother Len Speight - to celebrate

this significant birthday with Len. My younger brother Pat Speight hosted

Len at a beautiful luncheon at his home in Cork. I am celebrating Len’s

birthday at the other side of the world -with my BFF Sharon Hajek . Happy,

happy birthday Len. Together we celebrated your 60th and your 75th in

your beloved Venice. Perhaps an Italian rendezvous next summer for

your“81st”-Godwilling!🎉 🎈 🎊 🎂 🎁

Sharon and I enjoyed Len’s birthday at Pastini’s - a local restaurant that

remains open - at limited capacity. It was very nice to have company to

help me celebrate this happy/sad occasion.

Day #235 - November 7

Sharon Hajek tasted and rated my Apple Sorbet. A+. Yea!

#TasteTesting #Homemade #GreenApple #Sorbet was a huge success!

Sharon’s comments/opinion.

The Apple Sorbet had a crisp, sweet & tart flavor with just the right

amount of pulp for texture. Paired with #applecrostata and #calvados it

was the #ultimate #Parisiandessert simply #delicious”.

Day # 236 - November 8

Yesterday- What A Wonderful Day.. President Elect Biden/Vice President

Harris were declared the winners of the 2020 Presidential Election. Earlier

in the day Sharon and I enjoyed a fabulous tour of the stunning Portlandia

Pittock Mansion.

Life could not be better. After a great Zoom HH (in honor of President

Elect Biden & Vice President Elect Harris), with Diana&Alan, Karen& Bill,

Rick (and his lovely sister), Tim, Susan. Sharon Hajek and I continued on

to enjoy a lovely dinner. Crab Cakes, Hearts of Palm Pasta and Salad.

We enjoyed some more bubbles and then finally fell into a most beautiful

sleep.. we woke this morning to rested and ready to “hit the road” to begin

another fun adventure together.

Day #236/237 - November 8/9

Gorgeous drive from Beaverton, via Banks (remember fondly my Hood to

Coast Walks)..tour & lunch stop at Tillamook Creamery. Due to Covid we

could only get “food-to-go” so Sharon and I sorta “pigged out” on

Tillamook’s Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich AND the “other Classic”

Tillamook Mac&Cheese. To be fair we only ordered “one of each” and

shared the order. Also, in the spirit of “full disclosure” Sharon also had a

Tillamook Milk Shake and Cay Cooney did have an Tillamook Ice Cream

Cone. Due to Covid dining restrictions (still no inside dining throughout

Oregon. We dined “ a la voiture” (in our car). Can you say “yum, yum”).

We both did admit to having a bit of a “tummy ache” for the afternoon.

We safely arrived to our destination - The Sylvia Beach Hotel on NYE

Beach. We are overnighting at this Historic Landmark -built Circa

1910-1913. This “bijoux” is truly a hotel for Book lovers. Named after and a

tribute to Sylvia Beach, owner of Shakespeare & Company Bookstore in

Paris during the 20’s and 30’s, and one of the Century’s greatest patrons

of literature.

Sylvia Beach is located on the ocean at NYE Beach in Newport. It’s a

large, 4-story dark green wooden structure with a red roof, standing on a

bluff overlooking the surf. It’s my second visit - first visit for Sharon. I’m

so pleased it looks so well. It’s been really “spruced” up since I was last

here. All sleeping rooms are named in honor of both classic/famous

authors. Last visit I slept in the Edgar Alan Poe room. This visit Sharon & I

shared The John Steinbeck room. I just can’t seem to snag the Classic

Agatha Christie room as of yet. Next time hopefully! We enjoyed a

wonderful 4 course dinner - in house- complete with a graceful/impromptu/

modernity ballet performance from one of the hotel guests. This morning

we had a lovely “walk-about” the little town. Around noon our drive

pointed us south, then east to visit with Diana& Alan at the Applegate.

Day #238 - November 10

Butterfly Rest, The Applegate, Southern Oregon. Serendipity for sure -an

unexpected and nice surprise to be here again so soon after my visit just 2

weeks ago. Diana generously & graciously invited me to bring Sharon

( who is visiting me) to this peaceful oasis. Our drive south on the

beautiful Oregon Coast . 2 lovely stops on the way -a visit to the Tiny

Tranquility Community in Waldport - (I’m still interested in acquiring a Tiny House)- then a glorious stop at my all time favorite Oregon Coastal hamlet

- Yahats. I’d love to live in Yahats. Maybe I still may do that. Today, we

shared a relaxing morning before introducing Sharon to the charming town

of Jacksonville and a few hours of wine tasting! So happy to share these

happy day with Sharon. Life is good (TG)!

Day #237 - November 11, 2020

Veteran’s Day at the Applegate. This Oasis touches one’s soul! Tonight

Diana&Alan created a moment of such calmness for me and Sharon. No

fancy dinner (we ate a late and large lunch in Jacksonville) - just a glowing fire, fine wine, great conversation and dessert- Cay’s Apple Strudel ( made

with Applegate Apples). Followed by dancing at the Butterfly Rest.

Sharon & Cay danced joyfully just “ like no one was watching”. Tonight I

know I live as one very lucky woman. FYI World - neither Sharon or Cay

are Girl Scout material! Neither one are good at making a fire. Thankfully

Diana came to the rescue! Honestly it was a Fabulous evening. Thank you

to all our Veterans that served and also to those who continue to serve.

My God protect our troops! 🇺🇸

All good things must come to an end. Sharon’s visit had come to come to

a close - My Nest must slowly return to its more quite and gentle hum.

Sharon and I had a terrific rendezvous. We enjoyed our adventures to the

Coast (Sylvia Beach Hotel💜 📚 💜 ), an amazing drive through the

Oregon forest - to the Applegate, the fall colors were stunning 🍁 🌲 🍁 .

Day #244-244 - November 12/17

Cay’s Nest. It was a first visit for Sharon to Diana & Alan cosy home and

Butterfly Rest. Along our drive south and on our return journey we

enjoyed spontaneous stops - -Tillamook Creamery/ Tranquility Tiny

Homes/Yahats Beach/O’Brian Winery/Room 122 to name just a few.

(Sharon did all the driving so Ms Daisy Cay was happy.

Back at Cay’s Nest we enjoyed easy/slow meals and a bundle of giggles.

We walked in the gentle Oregon rain. Discovered a “neighborhood pantry”

being stocked by locals - I must remember to walk to the “Pantry” and add

some canned/non perishable items. Come back again Sharon - you are a

great guest! Until we meet again stay safe my friend. ☘

Day #246 - November 19

It’s a quite here at my Nest - I’m putting things back in place. Sharon was

the best “dish washer’. We did use lots of my “dainty” items and while

Sharon did all the “clean up” I needed to follow the motto - “a place for

everything and everything in its place”. While not a “neat freak” I do like a

sense of order to things.

Covid-19 is spiking all over the US. Our Oregon Governor Kate Brown has

imposed a stronger type of SIP (stay in place) again for 2 weeks (may be

extended). All are asked “Not to Travel” Restaurants can only serve “food to go” - Bars are shut - stores must operate at 25% capacity. Thus most of

us are staying home. This will have a huge impact on Thanksgiving - next

week. Honestly something serious has to be done. There is good news

on vaccines - 2 maybe even 3 should be approved within 2-3 weeks. Of

course it will be a few months before these vaccines will be made

available to all. However there is light in the tunnel. In the meantime we

must all take care. This means I will be so on my own for Thanksgiving.

Maybe go to Diana’s with Susan.

Day #246 - November 19

I’m feeling Nostalgic at Cay’s Nest - November 19th, 2020.

Annually on the third Thursday of November, France marks the arrival of

Beaujolais Nouveau. It's the country's most famous "vin primeur" (young

wine) and hails from the beautiful and highly protected Beaujolais wine-

producing region north of Lyon.

But this year, the coronavirus pandemic has put a damper on what is

otherwise a festive celebration across France and much of the world.

Personally, I always consider this an festive event and try to celebrate with

wine loving friends who appreciate this special date.

Celebrations in 2020 are too few and far between, but this one wine-filled

festivity is bringing me and my Beaujolais Nouveau “Amies”together, at

least in spirit.

Tonight, I especially miss sharing my bottle of 2020 Georges Duboeuf BN

with “ma belle” Caragh Cooney.

I feel sad for Paris tonight and all the cities/towns in France where the

Beaujolais Nouveau release is always such a festive occasion. Here’s to

2021’s release. 🇫🇷

As many of you know I prefer to drink Champagne/White Wine and feel

somewhat inadequate to describe any Red Wine. Thus, I am sharing Wine

Spectator’s following comments on the 2020 Beaujolais Nouveau:

“Gumdrop-laced blackberry and cherry notes are accented with violet,

smoke and herb elements in this creamy, light-bodied red, with a hint of

banana lingering on the finish. Drink now. 5,000 cases made”.

I salute everyone as I sip my wine in thoughtful solitude

My Covid-19 thought of the evening. At any given moment, on any given

day I am often thriving. However I am also a struggling, surviving /in crisis

individual. My guess most of us feel the same. Perhaps people in America

are suddenly “getting it” at the seriousness of this virus situation in the US.

Day #247-251 - November 20-25 .

Continued quiet days at my Nest. Bridge Meadows Community seems

very quiet. I’ve doing a little “volunteering” with a neighbor - Therese’s.

She has had a hip replacement operation. Therese is super independent

so I try not to be intrusive - just texts - “ how are you doing?.. need

anything/help. She has let me help her do laundry/empty the dishwasher/

have a little chat. It feels good to help. Today I also bought soil, daffodil/

spring bulbs. My neighbors Tony & Lidia helped me “clear/replant”my

wildly growing chrysanthemum plants. I’ve planted the bulbs in “grow

bags” (learned of this from Bonnie). Just trying to keep a sense or

normalcy going. I will be on my own for Thanksgiving. I’m a bit “bummed”

- even angry a bit that I am not included at the Applegate. To be fair - our

Governor has instructed us to limit gathering to “no more than 6” - from 2

homes. I’m not sure on this but I think my lack of invite has been a

coordinated one between Susan & Diana. When I was last at the

Applegate I asked D about coming down with S- thought I could drive as S has fractured her knee. D’s answer was “ ok with her if it was ok with S- at the moment I thought that an odd answer but I let it go. When I spoke with

S - offering to drive her she came back with “ it was not possible for us to

be together given the Governors’ directive” and that was not what D/A’s

wish”. Technically they had a point - but having me would have had the

numbers at 4 - from 3 households...I have seen them “stretch” the virus

guidelines many times (D/A’s 70th birthday for example). I believe they

both coordinated their decision not to include me. I feel a big part of the

decision had to do with each having dogs and I don’t. I’ve kept my

communication distant for the past few days. My feelings are hurt...I will

get over it..but it will take time. Maybe my feelings are more sensitive with

all the Covid/SIP situation. I’m sure many others feel the same way.

Day #252 -November 26, 2020

Happy Thanksgiving 2020 from Cay’s Nest. Although physically “on my

own” - I am “close in spirit to many”. I enjoyed a delightful morning

watching the 94th Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. No crowds on New York’s

iconic 34th Street this year - however the parade was a “Miracle” as

always.

Cay’s Nest. 2020 Thanksgiving Night!

When you come to the end of a gentle day it’s good to say “thank you” to

whomever grants us such bounty. I spent most of today “on my own”. I

feel blessed to have so much when so many have so little. After enjoying

the 94th Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade I cooked a somewhat unusual/

disjointed Turkey - one leg, one wing, one breast bird. When combined

with “the usual trimmings” I have enough food left over to last at least a

week. I’m grateful to have been able to share my bounty with others less

fortunate. Now I can “rest easy” and can surely say I had a very full -albeit

solitary, Happy Thanksgiving. For those of you who did venture afar I wish

you all a safe journey home!

Day #257 - November 30th

Cay’s Nest - “Every cloud has a silver lining” - today I realized this saying

applies even to all of us wearing our Covid-19 Masks - meaning that you

should never feel hopeless because difficult times always lead to better

days. Difficult times are like dark clouds that pass overhead and block the

sun - I discovered today during my winter afternoon walk that my Mask

keeps my face (nose/chin Cheeks) warm and toasty.

SoI’mgivingaresoundingYES✅ votetowearingourMasks.Staysafe

my friends!

Day #258 - December 1, 2020

Cay’s Study Group! Today I posted a photo on FB and challenged my

friends to “guess” the little creature in the photo. Ive been seeing this little

animal on my daily walks. “Top of the Class” award to those of you that

correctly identified this little/big fellow correctly. Well done to Susan

Danahy, Sue Caravalho, Lora Johnson for naming this bugger - it’s a

Nutria. I called the Oregon Fish & Wild Game helpline. They told me not

to worry that Nutrias are frequently found throughout the Pacific

Northwest, meaning Oregon and Washington.

For those interested - The Nutria is a large semi-aquatic rodent that lives

in colonies along rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

They tunnel along the streams, canals, or ditches, and through wetlands.

In warmer months, they live in dense vegetation and move into large

burrows when temperatures get colder. OF&EG said the landowner (s) is/

are responsible for removing any Nutrias that cause serious damage. So

ends today’s nature study. Class dismissed.

Day #259 - December 2

Cay’s Nest - however for “The Season” my Nest has been renamed “The

Elves Nest”🧝 🧝 🧝 -busy hands getting packages ready and off to

Australia & New Zealand -must mail today.. - mail will take approximately

21 days .. phew - made the deadline. Covid-19 has created longer mail

time requirements. I’m getting in the mood - have Christmas Music
playing 🎵 🎼 🎶 . Creating/maintaining as normal a life as possible.

Day #261 - December 4

Hello Caragh Cooney - TGIF for you!

I’m feeling accomplished.

Tonight:Turkey Soup at Cay’s Citchen! (I decided to add some Dumplings!

Day #262 - December 5

Cay’s Nest “oops” Elves Nest!

🎶 🎼 It’s beginning to look like Christmas🎵 🎶

Began to write my Christmas Cards. I really love writing Christmas Cards.

A chance to “remember” and “reminisce” on lovely times and dear friends!

(Diana- received your (and Leda’s)Christmas cards yesterday- my “firsts”

this Christmas season.

Day #266 - December 9

Cay’s Nest aka Elves Nest🎄 it’s been busy around here.

Christmas cards ✅

Shopping completed ✅

Presents for Caragh, Tiernan&Kalan wrapped and ready for mailing✅

Nest decorating

👎 next on the list👍

Enjoy all the hustle & bustle (Safely) and the Christmas music! Doing my

best to keep some normalcy in my life in what will be a most strange

Christmas.

Day #271 - December 13

Cay’s Nest - Each Christmas I like to decorate my front door. In this

chapter of my life I live in a Intergenerational Community (Elders over 55

assist Foster Parents -who take children from the system - many are

mentally fragile). We live in our own private apartments so I decorate my

apartment/door for most holiday times -

🎶 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 🎶 .. not sure why but it has

taken me 2 days to almost complete my Nest decorating- hard to believe.

I’ve used at least 75 “AA” batteries. I might have gone “over the top” with

lights. Sad it is only “little old me” that will enjoy the fruits of my labor. Oh

well, that’s OK, I had fun!

Day #272 - December 14, 2020

Cay’ Nest. What an incredible day this is for America and all Americans.

We have our first approved Covid-19 Vaccine. On December 11th The

Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Emergency Use

Authorization for the first Covid-19 Vaccine to Pfizer. This emergency use

authorization allows the Pfizer Vaccine to be distributed in the USA. I

believe I just must mark this day and make a statement about what it feels

like to see the first vaccines being given in the USA 🇺🇸 . I know we still

have a ways to go - but I for one take great pride and hope experiencing

another “giant first step” for America! God Bless all those amazing people

who made this historic moment happen -for all of us! Can’t wait for my

Covid-19 jab and be able to say “Take that Covid-19” “You are being

vanquished-slowly but surely” ! Bravo Science 🧪 🧪 🧪 Bravo USA 🇺🇸

Cay’s Nest - reminiscing - this weekend - last year 2019 - I enjoyed an

incredible weekend in New York City with my daughter. It was arranged by

Caragh as an early 75th birthday gift (May 6th 2020). Little did we know

that within six month we would be in the midst of Covid and this 2020

Christmas would find New York almost totally shut down. At times

FaceBook brings up our memories/fun times. These few days I have been

reminded of this glorious time and how fortunate Caragh and I were to

have had this fabulous trip - Covid virus would not allow such a trip this

year.

Day #274 - December 16th

Cay’s Nest is fully adorned with Christmas Holly!

“The holly and the ivy

When they are both full grown

Of all trees that are in the wood

The holly bears the crown

I have bunches of holly on display throughout my “Nest”.

Day #276 - December 18th

We have a second Vaccine. Today the FDA issued an emergency use

authorization (EAU) for Moderna Covid-19 vaccine. This is the second

vaccine approved for distribution in the USA. This is incredible news,

Such great news to hear as I am Relaxing on a “before Christmas” Friday

evening. This means the US now has access to 2 Vaccines to combat

Covid. I’m guessing that we can move forward to vaccinate many people

quickly. No doubt the transition of government will add confusion to a

vaccine distribution. I don’t believe very much will happen until the new

Administration is in place - after January 20th. I see a light in the tunnel

that is not a train. It’s really been a good day. Sharon’s “elegantly”

wrapped Christmas gift to me was delivered this afternoon. I’ve carefully

placed it under my Christmas Tree - oops -I meant under my Christmas

Tree -Desk Diana&Alan’s gift is also under my Christmas Tree-Desk

🎄-

Imagine - only 6 more nights and a “wake-up ‘till Christmas morning when

I can open my “prezzies”. So Exciting

Day #277 - December 19

Cay’s Nest - all ingredients prepped for Christmas Zoom HH @ 2:30 PST - with Sharon & Catherine Egan.. maintaining friendships Together but Apart

during ‘Covid”. We must continue to make all such efforts.

I enjoyed the fun Zoom with Catherine&Sharon. Our Santa Cosmopolitans

Cocktails were a big “Hit”! Santa Cosmopolitan is the Cocktail for this fun

time. Catherine suggested this fun/festive cocktail. We had this Zoom at

2PM PST. You might think “isn’t it a bit early” for HH at 2P - not if these 3

Amigos/Guests” span the Country. Catherine lives in New York, Susan

livesinSanFranciscoandyourstruly/Cay’NestisinOregon.🍸 🍸

Day #278 - December20th

Cay’s Nest -Yesterday was “Craft Day” at my Nest. I am not a Craft

person at Bridge Meadows. I never would have believed I should travel

such a “path less traveled” as a result of Covid-19. So today I’m

participating in Craft Day. Community members can’t “gather” so we are

doing our projects in our apartments. My projects are:

*Decorating Paper Gingerbread Men:

My Community decided that each person should decorate one of these

beloved Christmas treasures- the idea is to create a circle of these of

Gingerbread figures to represent this unique Intergenerational Community

as “Togetherness-Apart”.

*Christmas Card Art:

This idea is for each person to choose the name of another person/

neighbor - perhaps one whom one does not know so well and create a

“special” Christmas Card for that person.

Yesterday was my day for these two fun projects.

OMG - Yes, I had glitter/glue everywhere- on my face, in my hair! Glue on

fingers, glitter all over my floor. Craft genius I am not - but I “soldered” on

and I did enjoy myself - even the cleanup was not too bad.

Day #282 - December 24th

Christmas Eve, 2020

Cay’ Nest - All my favorite things surround me!

I have presents galore! Wish I had a little helper 🧝

My Nest is fragrant with Christmas scents and aromas!

I enjoyed a “delish” “Night before Christmas” Dinner - Lobster Thermidor,

BokChoy & little glass of Sancerre

Today I took myself to Rome (virtually) - to join our Beloved Pope Francis

as he celebrated his Christmas Mass from the Vatican - such holiness

among such splendor!

At 6:00 all of us at Bridge Meadow will “safely gather” with our Community

Children to join the world in Ringing Bells to guide Santa’s Sleigh. The

Bell Ringing is a Global Event. Hope many will join in and Ring a Bell -

make some Joyful Noise. Sad that this year the Children have not had

their annual visit to sit on Santa’s knee. Personally, I too am sad that I did

not get sit on Santa’s knee this year... I’m very hopeful for 2021.

DAY # 284 - December 26th

Cay’s Nest - St. Stephen’s Day

My Mother & Father were married on this date in 1939 - they were married

for 47 years! Yesterday I enjoyed a delightful Christmas Day Dinner and

an overnight at Lady Susan Danahy’s lovely new home. Ms Frida was in

good spirits and tried a million ways to encourage me to “play” doggie

games with her. She is a persistent little doggie - just like her Mama!

It was a great day and Susan is a gracious host - thank you Susan!

I so missed not being with my daughter Caragh and my amazing

grandsons Tiernan & Kalan. Hopefully we can be together Christmas

2021

Day #285- 289 - December 27-31, 2020

I am at Bonnie&Jerry’s -near Tahoe, California . Here for a a few days to

wave away 2020 and welcome in the year 2021🥳 ! Sharon will drive up

28th and share in our New Year’s festivities.

12/29 today Bonnie, Sharon and I played “tourists” around Placerville and

Eldorado (we always behaved very Social Distance compliant). It was a

beautiful, albeit a little chilly day. No sign of any snow so far. The three

ladies cooked dinners together Tuesday and Wednesday. Bonnie has

quiet a spacious kitchen so we had plenty of room to move around. On

New Year’s Eve one of Bonnie ‘s dogs (Labradoodle) needed Veterinary

care so Bonnie spent most day at the Vets. She was pretty tired and

stressed when she came home. We settled on “Heavy Appetizers” for

dinner. I went to bed around 9:00PM and missed out on “Ringing in the

New Year”. Perhaps that is a good “omen” that I am totally “over” 2020.

Roll on the New Year 2021. I’m Ready

January 1, 2021 - Welcome Happy New Year Day #289-312 - January 2021

I move into this new year of 2021 with my heart and mind full of hope. My

WMH project will appear a little different. My entries will be tracked, noted

by month. Key issues, particular events and various and sundry stories will be included. I’m fairly certain the first few months of 2021 will feature, at a

minimum, the following:

> Presidential Inauguration - January 20th, 2021

> Covid-19 Vaccinations for 80% of the US population

> Reduction in Covid-19 transmission

> Reopening of Schools for our children

> Ease of restrictions on Crowd Gatherings, In-Door Dining, Travel.

The Inauguration: the political scene has been so chaotic since the

election. It took several voting recounts, court filing and various

arguments before a final decision was made to official announce the valid

election of Joe Biden & Kamala Harris as these 46th President & Vice

President. It was not an easy time. The previous President refused to

accept that Biden won the election. Joe actually garnered 7M more votes

than Trump. To date T consistently state the election was “stolen” from

him and the total election was a fraud. Therefore he would not offer/

support a smooth handoff or transition by the old and new Administration.

Nonetheless the Biden/Harris team have kept their cool and have moved

forward despite great obstruction. On January 6th the previous Admin

encouraged a dreadful disturbance by Trump supporters to “Storm the

Capital in attempts to prevent the acceptance by the House of

Representatives efforts to validate the Electoral College votes, To keep it

simple lets just say justice prevailed and the results were approved/vetted,

There is so much more to this situation. I’m sure another writer will

eloquently describe the details in much more detail.

The good news is the actual Presidential Inauguration went off very

smoothly, as planned, on January 20th, 2021. All was calm - at least it

looked that way on the surface. The event was very well staged, Covid

compliance was visible down to the smallest detail and America stood tall

and proud in honor of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Security

was massive.

Covid-19 Vaccinations: Once in place in the White House Biden and

Harris went quickly to work, despite having to almost begin all over on

vaccination distribution and execution. It much be acknowledged the

previous administration’s efforts with development of the Pfizer & Moderna

vaccines (Warp Speed), little was in place for the distribution of the

vaccines to the public. Within a few weeks Federal/State plans were being

rolled out. President Biden committed to a program that would provide 1M

“shots in the arms” of the public within his first 100 days. He as ordered

the CDC to provide clear guidance to the States on how to best to execute

the vaccine distribution. Vaccinations are set up by Category.

Front line/medical workers

Etc., other workers TBA

Because the Vaccine supplies are sent to the individual States for

distribution management booking appointments at “Central” Vaccination

locations have been a bit problematic for a variety of reasons. Primary for

delays in obtaining appointments has been the lack of “available” vaccine

purchased/acquired and left by the previous Administration. I’m pleased

to say this problem is now well in hand.

One important note both vaccines available require 2 doses (shots). A

third vaccine will be forthcoming by Johnson & Johnson will require just 1

dose (shot).

My friend Sharon came for a quick visit (10 days). Sharon is in the midst if

a divorce process and it was time to negotiate the divorce settlement.

Due to Covid, most, if not all, Court cases are being held “online” - using

programs like Zoom. Because Sharon’s daughter lives with her she had a

need for better privacy so she asked if she could hold the Court

conference at my Nest. She also wanted me have some oversight on the

proceedings and perhaps offer some advice if needed. After some

discussion between both parties (and their legal mediators) mutual

settlement terms were agreed to,

During Sharon’s visit we took a little mini-vacation and went to Oregon’s

spectacular Mount Hood. Mt. Hood is an historical spot about 2 hours from

Portland . We stayed at Timberline Lodge Hotel. This property is famous

as the “eerie/haunted” hotel featured in the Stephen King novel/movie

“The Shining”. The services and amenities at the hotel were limited - due

to Covid restrictions. However the location is stunning and we throughly

enjoyed ourselves.

Day #319 -345 - February 2021

February 1, 2021: 422,399 US Souls were reported to have lost their

lives to Covid-19 - such a sober moment.

>Covid Vaccines

>Massive Winter storm hits Texas and surrounding states

>Landing on Mars

Covid Vaccines - February 20th: Happy Day! I received my first

Covid-19 vaccine. I was given the Moderna vaccine. It was a very easy

and efficient process, held at a local Recreation Center very near my

home. The Vaccinators were all from the Beaverton Fire Department.

Once vaccinated I was asked to stay in the Vaccination Center for 20

minutes to make sure I did not expensive any immediate side affects. I

was also asked to register online with the CDC to track any side affects. I

received a text each day where I answered 4-5 questions about any rare

but issues. I experienced zero side affects. I am scheduled to receive my

second “jab” (Irish name for shots ), on March 20th. I’m so happy about

this vaccination process,

Massive Winter Storm cripples Texas February 15: This storm caused

the unique Texas Electricity Grid to crash. Thousands of households were without power and water for several days. Huge impact throughout Texas.

Fingers pointed everywhere. No one is to blame and everyone is to

blame. Typical political shenanigans.

USA Landing on Mars - February 18, 2021. now that’s a journey.

Distance to Mars 293 Million miles - Now that’s a distance. The journey

from Earth to Mars took 7 months. The Spacecraft’s name is

Perseverance (Nickname Percy). What will he/she find. Who knows?

There are specific objectives and goals but it is all way to technical and

way over my brain width. The fact is: Percy landed on Mars today at 3:48

EST. Whohoo! Go USA 🇺🇸 !

It’s all just so exciting - especially with all the not so exciting drama going

on down here on Earth - Texas’s Power and Water outages to name just a

few on top of Covid-19. Crazy times. It was hopeful and exciting to take a

few moments and relish this marvelous achievement of America’s Space

genius. Many of us could watch this moment on TV. I loved it all.

3rd Covid Vaccine Approved - February 27th, 2021: On this day the

FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EAU) for the

Johnson&Johnson Covid-19 vaccine. This is the third (3rd) vaccine to be

approved for distribution in the USA. Shipment of an initial supply this

vaccine shipped almost immediately - with larger shipments planned by

March. This means the vaccination of the US public against Covid-19

proceeds with greater expediency. Such a positive announcement.

Remembering:I take a moment to remember 2 remembrance dates within

my family.

My mother, Hannah Clifford Speight who died on February 6th, 1984 - 37

years ago. Wow, I was 37.

My little/youngest brother John Speight who died on February 28, 1978 -

he was just a few days “shy” of his 17th birthday - can’t believe he died 43

years ago. I was 32. I still think of him as a little 10-12 year old little Irish

Lad.

Days #346 - 360 March 1-15, 2021

#happyinternationalwomensday #momdaughterlove #prouddaughter

Day #345 February 28, Just thinking of my fundamental life philosophy “It

takes Sunshine & Rain to make a Rainbow” 🌈 . Today I experienced both

joy & disappointment. I enjoyed a lovely Spring walk in my neighborhood

(So many signs of Spring) but tonight, unfortunately, I was unable to catch

a glimpse of/or “howl” at tonight’s Full Moon. I know Mr. Man/Ms. Madam

Moon was out there somewhere in all his/her glory. I do hope many

caught a glimpse of the elusive Moon. I’m always hopeful- perhaps I’ll be

lucky tomorrow night -maybe!

Day #353 - March 8th

International Woman’s Day: My daughter sent me this wonderful quote:

“The most courageous act is to think for yourself. Aloud.” -Coco Chanel

Thank you for helping shape me into the woman I am today, I love you!!

Day #354 -March 9th, 2021

Today is a bit of a sad day for me. A year ago today my sister Carol was

invited to go and Dance with her Heavenly Angels😢

“Sweet is the voice of a sister in the season of sorrow.”

(Benjamin Disraeli)

Today will be a thoughtful one for me: fire, candles, cups of tea and

reminiscing on the “happy times”- My memories really are blessings!

Rest In Peace little Sister! 🙏

Day #356- March 10, 2021

It seems this is the “official” 1 year Anniversary being recognized as the

date the Covid-19 Virus was deemed to be a Pandemic into the United

States. The following statistics are astounding to note:

# of US Covid Cases Confirmed: 23,900,000

# of US Covid deaths: 529,302

Looking back to a year ago - 3/10/2020 On todays, date, one year ago

the US was in a state of chaos:

Everyone was confused, scared. No one knew exactly what was really

happening. What should we do?

>Certain items were in short supply throughout the US

>There was a run on Toilet Paper, Household, Cleaning & Sanitization

materials.

>Hospitals began to run out of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

>Concern that our supply of Emergency and ICU beds might not meet

requirements

>Existing medical staff many not meet forecasted demands

>Travel in/out if the US was restricted. Many confusing messages were

being communication. Clarification had to made to all communications.

New York an other East Coast Airports experienced long lines at

both entry & departure airports.

>Travel from China was severely restricted

School, restaurants, movie theaters, gyms, beauty parlors, barber shops

were all ordered closed

Shelter in Pace (SIP) were put in place throughout the US

So began the longest Year! My daily notes will continue until MY

Anniversary date - taking my walks in the park/neighborhood. Cooking in

my kitchen. Reading my books. Writing my WWH Diary. Crochet a little.

Wearing my mask and keeping my 6 foot social distance.

Day #357 - March 12

It’s another Happy Friday ! Of course for us “lucky” Retirees we know that

everyday is Friday 😀 . During noting that during my my neighborhood

walk yesterday I noticed so many signs that mysterious Wintertime is

definitely transitioning to Happy Springtime.

Day # 358 March13

In reading this post I’m thinking you might well think I was “tipsy”, while

writing. Honesty I was not. I had one (1) glass of wine. However I found

myself sitting and thinking that many of us, certainly that includes me,

often spend moments thinking of what we wish we had - when we need to

just appreciate what we have. I realized how much I love my sweet “Nest”

and where I am now. A few of my good friends French say and believe I

should have a “bigger” place. I’ve had “bigger” and I’m delighted to say I

am very, very content were I am right now. It is said “ home is where the

heart is”. I know, for now, my heart belongs in this sweet “Nest” at this

time. Now, I’m going to pour myself a second glass of Sancerre! Life is

good. Stay safe everyone! ☘ 💚 ☘ !

Day # 359 - March 14th

Lots to look forward to next week. There will be much to celebrate.

St. Patrick’s Day will be on Wednesday, March 17th and my daughter,

Caragh Cooney’s 49th birthday will be on Friday, March 19th. Not

forgetting I will receive my 2nd Covid-19 Jab on Saturday. Let the happy

times roll.

Day #359 - March 15th, 2021

For me this date is my One (1) Year Anniversary of Covid-19. Just 6 days

“shy” of one complete year. Can it really be almost one whole year. Who

could have ever known.

My final thoughts:

This has been a year of shock and sorrow.

We must look back in sorrow, but, we must look ahead in hope.

There is light ahead. We are getting a handle on this dreadful pandemic.

We now have the Vaccine to combat this Covid-19 Virus. We have three

(3) approved and effective vaccines and more are in the scientific pipeline.

However, we must not move forward to quickly. President Biden says we must work together with optimistic caution. We must continue to wear our

masks, maintain appropriate social distance. Everyone must take the

vaccine. We are assured that enough vaccine will be available for every

adult by May 1, 2021. If we continue these steps together we might, many

of us just might, be able to gather together for a picnic or BBQ with our

loved ones and families on the 4th of July. How wonderfully American

those words sound.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this Women Writing History

Project. I like the idea that my story may be deemed worthy to be placed

and held in the National Woman’s History Museum Archives. I like to

dream that curious young women, sometime in the future, perhaps 100

year or more from now, may read my story as much as I enjoyed reading

the wonderful stories & diaries written by the American Pioneer Women.

Those amazingly strong, stout hearted and stalwart souls who were such

a key part of the Wagon Train Settlers that traveled the harsh 2,000 mile

journey west from Missouri to Oregon and California.

I thank you for this wonderful privilege.
