Emerging (2/3)
“Emerging,” my video journal, covers 60 days in May and June 2020, as lockdown ended in NYC, and protests against George Floyd’s murder began. Because of age and health conditions, my partner and I stayed in quarantine for 90 days from mid-March to mid-June 2020, from the beginning of spring to the beginning of summer. I numbered locked-down days on the calendar as my anxiety worsened, and I took photos of my quarantine art projects. In June, emerging from lockdown, I recorded images of our Queens neighborhood: flowers, a playground’s locked gates, a children’s mural thanking essential medical workers at a hospital across the avenue, and an apartment building with three large letters taped to a street-facing window: BLM– Black Lives Matter.
